This site is my blog and sometimes the topic is the blog or blogging.

So after 5 years of using MovableType, and talking about sticking with things yesterday, I’m planning on switching this blog to WordPress. As I said a few months backWordpress-Logo

I think WordPress is easier to setup and it’s also easier for beginners to do quite advanced things with WP than Movable Type. From the other perspective, I think that doing really super advanced things is easier with Movable Type, while doing ultra-advanced things are probably equal between the two.

I’ve slightly modified that a bit to make it more accurate in what I’ve learned since then. I’m also going to add that

Upgrades appear to be much easier to do in WordPress, they’ve all been pretty painless for me. (I never even liked doing incremental upgrades with MT)

Maybe as I customize things more this won’t be as true but for now it’s been pretty easy. And it’s an educational thing for me too, I’ve really enjoyed learning about it…

So for the next month(?) I’ll be changing and testing things. I’ll be running both in tandem stating soon, I’ll want some posts/archives once the switch is made. I’ll probably switch back and forth a few times as I’m testing so be patient with me as I make changes. The worst tests might be for the people using RSS readers, but I’ll try to keep those disasters minimal. If you see things broken for more than a day it means I didn’t notice, so please e-mail me and let me know.I don’t think I’ll be able to ever import everything the way I want to: keeping all my old permalinks and everything else so that I don’t break a million back-links to my site (and throughout my site). So I think when I do the final cut over everything 2008 and before will stay on MovableType and everything 2009 and after will be on WordPress.

I’ll be documenting this since I’m sure I’ll have to do some interesting things for category archives (I think I’ll fudge the last entry of each category to include the old posts) and searching the archives (this may require two searches, but I’m not sure yet).

If I can’t integrate them very well, I’ll just have a prominent button that says “click here for 2008 and earlier”. And I’ll modify a lot of the old templates to say ‘click here for the new stuff’. I’d just hate to have to do that for all the category stuff.

Any tips on the migration from anyone? Any resources?

One of the oldest blogs and most political blogs I read is Dean’s World. Their tag line is “Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.” Lots of authors for posts so lots of different viewpoints are shown. They cover topics ranging from politics (mostly) to humor to Battlestar Galactica (and have an open comment post once a weekend where you can talk about anything).

I’m not very political so many times I don’t know what they’re talking about but that doesn’t stop me from coming back. But if you haven’t seen it, it’s worth checking out.

When I say “oldest blog” I mean they are one of the blogs I’ve been reading for the longest time. I’m not sure how I first found them – from a national story or something more local (Dean is in South-East Michigan). Check out some of the many times I’ve mentioned Dean’s World in my blog.

Unfortunately, you do have to register to comment, but they do make it pretty painless and it does count out a lot of the junk.

I really hope I can make it to TequilaCon 2009….

I’m sad I couldn’t go (again).

While I’m just home relaxing this weekend, last week was cRaZy, next week will be semi-crazy and I just went on vacation and I go again in June.

So I’m always editing my posts. Generally, just in the first hour (or two) but occasionally (rarely) up to a day later. I’ll see little things I want to change/correct or I’ll notice typing errors. Sometimes I’ll remember something I left out and I’ll add it. I’m trying to make the blog post better, more readable and more complete.

I don’t change the slant or idea of something I had but I’ll firm up the idea sometimes. Sometimes I wonder how that info gets around the ‘net though. I know some people will read me via RSS or Atom or something, but once their software grabs my feed, if I change the article do they get the latest version if I don’t revise the date (and if I do revise the date do they have two copies?)?

I know sites start to index pages and RSS feeds and update Technorati and other sites like that and I’m not sure what version those end up with in the end, or how often it takes to re-index those files.I guess when people comment they see the full and latest post, but I’d have to assume they don’t really notice…

REVISION LOG:
1 – minor correct.
2 – took out a short paragraph about my RSS feeds, I forgot they were dynamic now; that’s a bigger change than normal (see I was still thinking about it while cooking so I checked and corrected it).
3 – Minor structure and a spelling error.
(I think I’m done now)

Miscdavecago-2So off to Chicago to meet some bloggers. A few I read all the time, a few that read me, a few I’ve read a few times and I’m sure there will be some introductions between strangers. Plus I know a few bringing some non-bloggers. It looks like it will Kevin, Dave, Jenny, RW, Chanakin, Mocha and me. (I’ll update this if anyone else shows).

I’m actually on my way there now (blogging courtesy of my new Treo 700p with BlueTooth wireless connection to my PowerBook; review forthcoming) eating at a Wendy’s somewhere along the way. I’m staying at Heather’s (new blog under construction), who’s not coming but coincidentally is the one who got me into blogging.

That guy on the logo is cartoon Dave from Blogography he’s in from Seattle. I think everyone else is semi-local (other then me from Dearborn/Detroit), but I could be mistaken. I’ll post more on the meet later…

So I have to give Jeremy Hermanns credit, it looks like his third personal blog post is about his airplane de-pressurizing and having to wear an oxygen mask. Oh, did I forget to mention that he manages to snap some pictures with his Treo during all the action.

It looks like he runs (works with?) a few other blog sites, but looks as if he just started his personal blog the week before.

I’m glad he thought to take photos, he’d have been kicking himself later since he had it on him.

If you actually want to hear about the incident, you’ll have to read it for yourself.

I noticed last night that no one in my BlogRoll list (lower tight) had been updated lately (for 48 hours they should be bold and italic), it was a very short list. But this morning there wasn’t anyone listed as updated (but at least the list is still there). Any one else having this problem?

LATER: I know Jennifer chimed in (below) to say she was having the same problem. It seems to be okay now as of Monday, October 3, 2005.

I didn’t even know they were broken. Although I was a little disappointed on the lack of comments recently I just thought it was slow (or I’ve been extra boring).

Tonight, I realized it’s been 3 days with out any comments (and I’ve posted more than usual). So I started poking around. I was changing something on the layout 3 days ago and while it seemed fine when I was done, I guess I broke something. And it broke it for all the posts so you couldn’t even post on the older posts.

So if you’ve commented on something recently, it’s been lost. Sorry. PLEASE feel free to post (or repost) any any post again…

Comments are like caffine, they get a blogger energized. And while I’ve been posting a bit lately, I’ve been missing the buzz…

Garysaid logoSo I’ve got the new design up at http://GarySaid.com/. (If you’re viewing this at the old site it doesn’t look new, it’s probably starting to look broken as I move things and directory paths break). I’ll be patching a few things (especially on the sidebars) over the next week. So give me a few days to patch all the cracks (unless you see something really bad).

Please change you links and blogrolls to this site…

It’s been making me crazy that I haven’t ever finished changing my layout after I started it a few weeks ago (I never intended to permanently keep that crazy background). I’ve looked for layouts and backgrounds a few times but never really found what I wanted. Actually I still haven’t found exactly what I wanted, I really wanted something with a more “springy” feel to it (but I was trying to avoid flowers and such)…

Trish had some patterns that I liked so I picked them up for a great price from In A Mood Designs at iam-designs.com

I really liked the background I’m using (scroll down to see it without text in front) it’s got the greens I was looking for (with some yellowish tones and red) but in an outer-space nebula-ish looking way (but I never ended up using the greens in front).

So the awful colors aren’t bothering me so much anymore (but I’m pretty exhausted), I think they’ll stay for a few days…

I was really looking for a something spring-ish but everything seemed to be too sporty or two girly for me…

So I know the colors (on my blog) are awful. I’ll fix them but my batteries are dying and I don’t want to get stuck halfway through an edit. Just for chuckles, scroll down and look at the background (it’s not really moving).

1) How long have you been blogging?
One year and a few months.
2) How many templates (looks) have you had for your blog since it’s inception? Do you design your own or have someone else do them for you?
Probably close to ten, I had a while that I was messing with it all the time, especially when people complained about the swirling graphics. I usually use my own layout template but I usually use a free template as a basis; that means I’ll use some of their colors and a graphic or two.
3) How many posts have you made on your blog? How often do you post?
This will make number 573, I average about one-and-a-half a day but I don’t post every day… I post every few days, more on the weekends.
4) For many of us having a blog also means we read blogs. Let’s share a few of our favorites for some blog recess linky love.
I read gobs and gobs of them. You can see my blogroll list on my home page on the lower right.

Have you seen my new sidebar on blog start page? “Interesting Recent Sites” If I’m on a site and I think it’s interest I hit a button* and it moves it up to the server. It just keeps the last dozen or so sites.

* How – AppleScript to get the URL and the tile (or a text clipping from the page) and does a tail for the end of the list and FTPs it up to my site and then a PHP include from the site grabs the file and sticks it in the sidebar box! After a few more revisions I’ll post the info up for the geekier of you. If interested in the info when I get it together, leave a comment for this message…

So I’ve totally redone this site in PHP. You shouldn’t get any .HTML files any more, if it does it should automatically redirect you. But if you do notice (even if it redirects you) any internal links that have .HTML in them (or you get the big if you can see this then… message, please leave me a message (e-mail or in the comments). I’m really afraid of links back to specific entries not working (with from other sites or from Yahoo!/Google). Thank you!

Dawn’s site, breakdAwn, has only been up for ten or so days now and she’s already changed the layout three or four times. That’s not to say she hasn’t been writing, just that’s she’s gotten into this. Now who else can I recommend this to..?
