Do you use ChangeNotes?

Please be aware that ChangeNotes seems to be gone.
I’ve been using ChangeDetection.com for the same purpose now.
It appears to offer pretty much the same service.

ChangenotesI really like ChangeNotes and I don’t think I’ve mentioned it before so here’s some info for you. It’s a free service and they monitor web pages and let you know when they change. To me this is only useful on pages that don’t change very often. I use this on pages such as I’m waiting for information on a new book from an author, when the local shelter is doing a fund raiser, when the Mags For Miles list changes, or other pages that don’t change very often.

They’ll let you put a link on your page to make it easy for people to sign up so they’re alerted when your site changes. This isn’t so useful if you have a blog that changes daily, but for something that doesn’t change very often it’d be great.

The downside: It’s generally a slow site but since you don’t go there very often, that’s okay with me. I’m not really sure if they check the pages every day (but it’s at least every few days). Sometimes you get alerts when a page they check has time-out errors.

1and1 Web Hosting – Review

1And1So I use 1and1 for my web hosting for this site and I really like them. They’ve got $5.99 domain name registration all the time (that’s the best ‘all the time’ price around) and a variety of plans and they really have all sorts of options you can choose from (news on your page, mySQL, SSI, PHP, clipart, some built-in flash, e-mail, ftp, ssh, statistics, photo albums and more). They’ve got plans as low as $2.99 a month and that includes a domain name (lower priced plans don’t have all the features) and 1GB of storage and 150 e-mail accounts.

My biggest complaint has always been the web interface to manage things was slow, but they just fixed it!!! That’s why you’re getting this pitch, I was just using it and the new interface is much nicer and much faster. And the interface works well with a Mac (at least with Safari on my OSX Tiger machine).

THIS DEAL IS EXPIRED!

Interesting Recent Sites

Have you seen my new sidebar on blog start page? “Interesting Recent Sites” If I’m on a site and I think it’s interest I hit a button* and it moves it up to the server. It just keeps the last dozen or so sites.

* How – AppleScript to get the URL and the tile (or a text clipping from the page) and does a tail for the end of the list and FTPs it up to my site and then a PHP include from the site grabs the file and sticks it in the sidebar box! After a few more revisions I’ll post the info up for the geekier of you. If interested in the info when I get it together, leave a comment for this message…
