Tube Background

I thought this background was going to look very cool. I modified a tube map to be a repeating tile and chose colors to match. I was going to change the dotted borders to look a little more like tube lines but I’m not sure how long I’m even going to keep this. I was disappointed on how all the colors came out…

Guess where I’m off to next week?!?

Grace Hopper

Quote of the Day (from my today info on the lower right of my page).

A ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.
Grace Murray Hopper

I never knew she said that. She’s this wonderfully crazy Admiral in the Navy, had a lot to do with computing. She passed away in 1992 and I know I saw her on Letterman a time or two. She was great with analogies (which I love) when talking about technology. I remember seeing her on some show talking about the speed of computers and explaining it quite well with spaghetti and pepper.

The other thing that she’s attributed with (which I’m more certain she actually said) is:

The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from.

She’s got her own entry in TV Tomb and I think there is a big computing conference with her name in the title.

S-x Flash Mob – S-xy Saturday

If you knew about a sexy flash mob in your area, and all people joining had to get undressed in the middle of the city, would you join in for the fun of it? Does it matter to you to show naked body in public or even private? Or do you enjoy showing yourself around, and do you feel proud about it or just natural? If you are afraid of showing your body, why is it so and when did it begin to feel uncomfortable?

I’m not sure if I’d join in and the only reasons are: 1) it’d be a silly reason to get arrested and 2) I’d have to check and see if there is a morals clause in my work contract :)

Otherwise, it wouldn’t matter to me, public or private I’ve really no inhibitions about it. It’s just natural, it’s never bothered me. I feel dumber at the doctor in the lame little robes they have there than if I was just standing there.

Sleep – 3x Thursday

1. On average, how many hours of sleep do you get a night? Is it enough, or do you need more?
7 if I’m lucky. I usally catch up 1 or 2 nights a week (with 10-12 hours).
2. Do you normally sleep pretty well at night, or are you a toss & turner, insomniac, etc?
I have a hard time getting to sleep, can lay for hours sometimes.
3. Do you sleep alone, or with someone? If you sleep alone normally, how do you fair when you sleep next to someone, or vice versa if it’s the opposite?
It depends. Sometimes I sleep better and sometimes not… “Excercise” before bed helps sometimes.
Bonus Question for Comments: What’s your ideal sleep schedule?
About 2am to 10am. That’s what it seems like my body really seems to like….

The Taking – Dean Koontz

Just finished reading the new book by Dean Koontz. Starts off as a creepy horror story in a really big storm but in the end it’s definitely not that. The story moves you along (as long as you can ignore the icky parts), has a strong female character (which isn’t always the cast) and if you like T.S. Elliot you might even like it more (since there are a few quotes by him). The cover is very misleading I can’t think of what the artwork reminds me of, but it’s not “right” for the story, IMHO.

Not very detailed of a review but I don’t want to give anything away, but if you’re a fan (or you like Sixth Sense type stories) you’ll enjoy it.

We Wanna Know – Sunday Brunch

1. Looking back on the past week, what was your favorite moment? I had a really nice day Friday, I took the day off because the weekend was supposed to be yucky (and it ended up being nice most of the time). Blading, happy hour, errands (crossed a lot off my list) Fireworks at The Henry Ford with Kelly, Liz and Thomas.
2. Tell us about funny moment that had you and others laughing ’til it hurt. My buddy Mark was moving and we we lifting some stuff of the edge of the patio (it was about 6 feet off the ground and very long, the door from the living room and bedroom open to it). Heather and I were pushing the mattress up and no one was there so I yelled for help. Mark comes running out, into the closed glass door (and I swear the glass bowed out a few inches) knocked himself silly and instead of opening the door and coming out, he ran around inside and came out the other door. Every time I saw him for the next few days (weeks) I just burst out laughing.
3. What is one of your favorite childhood memories?
4. Tell us about a time when you were traveling when things just didn’t work out as planned. Costa Rica – driving through the mountains to get to Mount Arenal (the world’s most active volcano). Driving around trying to find a hotel or food while avoiding the HUGE wacos (pot holes) by the time we found the place we had blown a tire and the hotel was all but closed. We convinced the guy at the desk who didn’t speak any english to get us some food because we we starving so bad (he didn’t even charge us). He chopped up mangos and fruit and all sorts of stuff for us what a crazy night.
5. Have you ever been in the middle major storm (blizzard/tornado/hurricane/earthquake)? If yes, tell us about it. Yes. Last minute I flew down to visit Christine (West Virgina) over New Year’s (about 5 years ago), I had flight issues (not weather related) just getting there and the day I went to leave there was a huge blizzard there and in Michigan. I’m pretty patient so I checked into a hotel and went to the mall (I figured movie, food, shopping, etc.). During the movie (Step Mom) they close the mall, but no one tells us, so now they have a bunch of emotional people trapped in the mall. All the restaurants are closed, everything is iced over. I took me three hours to get a cab to take me back to the hotel. The hotel had no indoor pool, no gift shop, just basic TV, even the airport which I went to a half dozen times didn’t even have anything. I had actually read all they books they had already (except for the romance novels). It was a disaster when I got back to Detroit, people were basically living in the airport, it was like something out a war movie with all the refugees, I’m not kidding that’s how I felt. When I went down to get my luggage there was luggage from the past few days there stacked 5 feet high. They conveyers were three pieces of luggage deep, when people grabbed luggage they couldn’t dislodge it and got dragged along. It was the only snow day they had the few years I worked at that school district and I missed it…

When I Was A Kid… – Chick Chat

1. Fav. Book as a Child?: I loved the Alvin Fernald books (A’s Secret Code, Mayor for a Day, etc.), always doing fun stuff and getting into trouble (and yet still helping out).
2. Fav. TV Show as a Child?: I loved the Wonderful World of Disney, Sundays at 7, I think… A different show/movie every week.
3. Fav. Movie as a Child?: The “Escape from With Mountain” movies, I loved Tia and Tony. FYI: Tia played Alvin’s sister on the Wonderful World of Disney movies (I didn’t realize how all 3 questions tied together until this second).
4. Fav. Food as a Child?: PB & J. Lunch and Dinner! I still remember mom getting excited the first time I at a hamburger.
5. Fav. Outfit as a Child?: Jeans and a T-shirt. I think it was always a white t-shirt.
