1and1 Web Hosting – Review

1And1So I use 1and1 for my web hosting for this site and I really like them. They’ve got $5.99 domain name registration all the time (that’s the best ‘all the time’ price around) and a variety of plans and they really have all sorts of options you can choose from (news on your page, mySQL, SSI, PHP, clipart, some built-in flash, e-mail, ftp, ssh, statistics, photo albums and more). They’ve got plans as low as $2.99 a month and that includes a domain name (lower priced plans don’t have all the features) and 1GB of storage and 150 e-mail accounts.

My biggest complaint has always been the web interface to manage things was slow, but they just fixed it!!! That’s why you’re getting this pitch, I was just using it and the new interface is much nicer and much faster. And the interface works well with a Mac (at least with Safari on my OSX Tiger machine).

My other complaint is that you must have them manage your DNS list (you can buy your domain name somewhere else but 1&1 must host it and the sites that goes with it, you can point your mail MX record somewhere else). This probably will not matter to the average user (and probably isn’t understandable either).

FYI – Movable Type requires Perl (which is not in the $2.99 plan) this means you need at least the $4.99 plan to run it.

  1. I use 1and1 also and glad I do. They keep up with the right technology. I left my other domain host provider because I wanted to upgrade to MT 3.11 and they wouldn’t install a newer version of perl. Idiots.

Went to 1and1 and have experience no down time. yet. *knock on wood*

  2. I use 1and1 for some websites I host. While I haven’t been disappointed with their service, I think their online control panel is not very user friendly. I registered several domain names through them that I later decided not to keep. They auto-renewed them for me even though I didn’t want them. Also, unless this has been changed in the last year, you can’t view a directory through your browser. You have to have index.html or some other page or else you get an error page.

So, I think they provide a good service but still have some kinks to work out.
