A weekly meme of threes.

Onesome: Cooked to?– Okay, the easy one: if you’re having grilled meat (steak/hamburger) this weekend, how would you like it cooked?
Well done. I don’t need it like a puck but I don’t want any red. I don’t want any indication this was on a living creature at some time previous to my eating it….
Twosome: Medium– to large? …too large? What do you think of the big ol’ plasma screen HDTVs available now? I mean, would you if you could?
Awesome, but if you’ve got a room you can dim you can probably put in a projector for lots LE$$. Mine is 105 inches diagonally!
Threesome: Rare– Footage: one of the major news services recently announced they would make archived news coverage available for personal purchase on DVD. Is there any one piece/segment/area of old news (or new) you’d like to have on your bookshelf to view “whenever”?
Yes, I’d like all the times I’ve made it on TV for one reason or another on one DVD (and others in my family too). But real news? Not really.

Onesome: PremiumHave you tried any of the fast food empire’s ‘Premium’ sandwiches lately? Was it any good?
I just tried the new a Sirloin Steakhouse Cheesesteak Sandwich (sliced beef, cheese, onions peppers and some kind of parmesan sauce on a new bun/roll) at Arby’s but they don’t list it on their web site so it must be a trial of some sort. It was delicious and they sell it as a wrap too.
Twosome: ChickenChicken, beef, fish, tofu… What’s your dietary staple?
Mostly beef and chicken. If it’s fish it’s generally scrimp (or fast food). The Deluxe Chicken at Burger King is delicious too.
Threesome: Sandwich Let’s do lunch! Do we head for that fast food place? …or will noon find us over at your favorite deli noshing down?
Generally at lunch (M-F) is fast food, maybe a Panera (usually if I know I’m working late

The Thursday Threesome is back after some technical difficulties with their Domain Name Renewal so that is the theme for today’s questions…

Onesome: Domain–Hypothetically, if you could own any domain name you wanted, what would it be and why?
McDonalds.com would be a good one, I’m sure it’s worth some $$$. But I’d like LaPointe.com or Hill.com which are family names (even lapointefamily, com or hilllfamily.com would be nice). I’d just like to get more family “stuff” on-line and that would be a good address.
Twosome: Name— Are you called by something other than your legal name? If not, have you ever had a nickname? Or done something weird with your name, to try and stand out? Like an odd spelling or a slightly different pronunciation? Or just flat out wanted to change your name? To what?

No, never any nicknames nor do I feel any need to change my name. Although I’m not real attached to it (my last name, not my first name) and if (when) I even get married if she doesn’t want to change her name, I’d change mine. Although I’m the last male LaPointe so it might upset some family…
Threesome: Renewal–Do you have any magazine or other subscription that is an absolute ‘must renew’ whenever you get the notice?
I almost always renew my Scientific American and my MIT Technology Review subscriptions. Those come to mind probably since they are are a little pricey (although sometimes I use my airline miles to buy them), most of my other magazines I get a real deal on (if not free). Oh, and I’m usually subscribed to Wired too, but that’s only $1 a month…

Onesome: Routine— Tell us about your morning routine. Do you get up at the same time every day, or do you sometimes hit the snooze button on your alarm clock more often than you should? Do you head straight for the coffee or into the shower?
A bright light turns on automatically just before the alarm, I hit snooze a few times and get up. Turn the shower on, put some bacon on the stove and hop in the shower. Flip the bacon, get some clothes, bacon in the oven to warm and put on an egg. Grab the cellphone out of the charger, drag the podcasts that got downloaded in the night onto the iPod. Flip egg, dress, cut a slice of catelope, eat, leave. (Other than the iPod part this has been my routine for years)
Twosome: Scheduled— What’s on your schedule for the day? Do you schedule every minute or go with the flow?
I gotta go with the flow, but there are days when it’s all pre-scheduled in advance.
Threesome: Maintenance— What do you do to maintain your sanity each day in this hectic world? Do you find a little time to yourself each day and meditate, or wait until everyone’s tucked in for the night and log on to the computer or settle down with a book? Or do you run off to the gym and maintain your body while maintaining your mind?
I always need to escape work and get lunch and I generally read a book while eating. Sometimes I’ll read before bed too (but a different book, since the first one is still in the car).

Capricious: Governed or characterized by impulse or whim, lacking rational basis or likely to change suddenly:

Onesome: Characterized by impulse–Do you you consider yourself impulsive or do you tend to think everything through before you make a move?
I’m pretty impulsive. Except – buying electronic toys and relationships. If I rush into them I tend to not appreciate it enough.
Twosome: lacking rational basis–If you are impulsive, do you rationalize and justify your actions? Like, since that item you bought on a whim was on sale, you really saved money by buying it?
Sometimes. If it’s on “sale” it might make more sense to buy it then run around trying to find a better price.
Threesome: or likely to change suddenly— When you make up your mind, does it stay made up or do you tend to change your mind at the last minute? …or do you waffle back and forth until you’re forced to decide?
I generally make up my mind. Sometimes I waffle and the decision is made for me…

Onesome: Things that go– What’s the strangest contraption you’ve ever had to use to get from point A to point B?
After thinking about it, probably my legs and feet. A bike is just some wheels and gears but your legs and feet are pretty complicated for actually working and lasting for as long as they do.
Twosome: Bump– Have you ever hurt yourself doing something you weren’t supposed to be doing?
In gymnastics in college, I was using the vault without a spotter. I fell and knocked myself silly but I stood up and acted like I was fine or I knew the professor would kill me…
Threesome: In the night– Do you believe in things that go bump in the night or anything supernatural?
Yes. But it’s only “super”-natural in that we don’t understand it (yet).

Onesome: School— Since the school year seems to be over (your mileage may vary: some of you are already in summer sessions!): what was your favorite year in school? Yeah, the one you had the best time in or learned something special or had that learning breakthrough?
I loved the year I spent in my master’s program. Projects I liked, classes, I liked, profs I liked, I think I even got in a lot of dating and socializing in that year!
Twosome: Bus— Hey, how did you get to school in the early years? Walk? Bike? Mommy van? Bus? …and for those still attending, how are you getting to and fro these days?
Walked, when I got older I biked. When I got to middle school, I was pretty good on my bike in the snow (falling on the ice is way better than falling on cement).
Threesome: Stop— …and when did you stop going to school? …or did you? Are you still at it? Any plans to go back for those who are out of the system?
I went for 11 years straight. One summer I worked at a camp but every other summer I took classes. 4 Associate’s, 1 Bachelor’s, 1 Master’s and a lot of assorted credits. I loved college, I loved my assistantships too. I only left because they kept complaining about ‘academic progress’ or something like that… I didn’t really like the Ph.D. classes so much. I miss it, I miss the East Lansing area. What I really miss is that every 10 weeks class was over and you got to start over, you could only fall so far behind before you ‘reset’ back to the starting line again. it was kind of refreshing.

Onesome: Learning– Hey, what would you like to learn how to do this Summer? Learn to ride a motorcycle (like Sarah)? Learn PHP? Learn how to chill out and vegetate properly (lessons available )?
PHP! Just learning so that’s a good mission. If only the laptop had a brighter screen so I could use it better outside. I’d like to learn how to rollerblade backwards! I’ve never be able to do that (on purpose).
Twosome: to– Too? Two? Okay, two things you are positively not going to learn how to do! Ever!
Splunking (big fear of getting trapped in a cave/suffocating). Hunting for sport.
Threesome: Ride– Speaking of motorcycles: Do you ride? Did you ever ride? …or do you just enjoy them? …or maybe, “No way!”?
I used to. I had a bike as a kid and it was street legal so when I turned sixteen it was the only two wheels I had to ride. It’s fun but I’m a packrat and a bike doesn’t work for me (my convertible on the other hand…)

Onesome- Beginnings: Are there any television shows out there that you’ve watched regularly from the very beginning?
Joan of Arcadia, Smallville, Sports Night, Friends, Alias, Strange Luck, Roswell, VR5 and probably a few other sci-fi shows that didn’t last wlong.
Twosome- Middles: What about shows that you came into in the middle of the season but immediately grabbed your attention and turned you into a die-hard fan?
Actualy Friends was a middle of the season and but I was hooked. Mad About You hooked me for a while. I’m sure there is more
Threesome- And Ends: Recently, a number of big name shows have ended, Friends, Fraiser, The Drew Carey Show, and the cult hit, Angel. Did you watch any of the big finales? Have you ever been really sad to see a show go?
I was sad to see Sports Night and Roswell go. Every thing else was kinda short, this year I’ve lost a few: The Handler, Wonderfalls, I’m with Her, Century City and I’m sure there are a few more but I’d have to check my TiVo.

  • Onesome: Fax— Do you have access to or use a fax machine at home? Just curious… Yes. It’s the best $40 I’ve spent. And it makes copies too, much better than running up to Kinko’s.
  • Twosome: Cover— Hey, summer’s coming! What type of cover up do you use when you’re out in the sun? SPF4000? Sun clothes? A hat? “What sun; I live in a cave?” I usually don’t cover up enough. But when I do, I use whatever’s around.
  • Threesome: Sheets— 120 count or 180? (guys are exempt, but you could ask someone who knows!) 40 or 50, they’re pretty old… Actually I think they’re 180, but I’d have to go count to be sure!

Onesome: Goodie– What is your your favorite “goodie” you treat yourself to when you’ve finished a project or maybe even just survived a long day? Ice cream? …a long bath? …a good book? Ice cream. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!
Twosome: Two– Quick! Two things that make you smile! No thinking, just write! Little Kids and Ice Cream. Both pretty much guarentted to put a smile on my face.
Threesome: Shoes– …and how about your favorite pair of shoes? You know, the ones you look for an occasion to wear! (Yes, guys that ratty pair of tennis shoes does count…) I have two favorite pair (actually six), one pair is black dress shoes the other are rebock white tennis shoes (club c). I have three identical pairs of each from brand new (for nice days) to regular to ratty (for rainy yucky days). Actually I probably have four pair of each since I bet I have a pair of each new in a box in my closet. I hate shoe shopping, I have a few brown pair, and I’m not excited about any of them.

    1. A geek– Hey, who handles tech support at your place? You? …the six year old? …or someone from outside? …and how about in your web space? No, we’re not looking for techs; we’re just curious . I’m it in my family, I do all my own web space (including my own Movable Type installation stuff). I’m the house that relatives call/visit when upgrading stereo or computer equipment.
    2. in the– computer? Just a curiosity for the designer types: what Operating System are you running? …and which browser? Since sites can show up differently in different browsers it’s more than a casual question. Macintosh OS X mainly (sometimes Windows, sometimes Linux). Mostly using Safari.
    3. Family– Do any family members read your place? Do they care? Do they have a clue? …and how about your ‘off line’ friends? …or do you supply a little bit of separation there? My mom stumbled upon it when visiting a relative, they decided to send me mail (and found my ‘blog). She didn’t say much about it, I have no idea if her and/or other relatives read it. I don’t mention it to friends generally. If they find it they find it… I usually don’t complain and I always avoid talking about dating so how much trouble can I get into?!?

  • Onesome: Insomnia– Ever have it? Some do and some don’t, but have you ever been hounded awake for that endless hour after hour with no hope of sleep? …or does the very act of touching head to pillow put you out for the count? Usually it’s a fight to get to sleep, I’d much rather be a night owl. Sometimes I start to doze off while reading or watching video, but I fight it like a little kid who doesn’t want to go to sleep. Sometimes I’ll doze off in bed and find a book or laptop next to me, maybe not the best but it’s better than tossing and turning. Lately it hasn’t been a problem, maybe the spring change kicking up the allergies?
  • Twosome: the cure– Hey, if you do have the occasional bout or chronic insomnia, what do you do about it? Work? Read? Try cures? Hmmm… Did you ever find one that worked? I can count on Ambien but I really ned a good nights sleep (8+ hours) to go with it. Sex works too, but it’s not an option often enough.
  • Threesome: for sleep– Female/male, young/not so young, we all need varying amounts of sleep. What’s your personal sleep cycle? Five hours? Ten hours? …and if you had a choice, what would be your personal sleep cycle? …and yes, “All day long” is a valid answer I usually get five or six a night and catch up on the weekends ten to sixteen (rarely). Preference would be to need none, but otherwise seven to eight every night would be great.

Home for geeky toys and some sleep.

    1. Onesome: Home- What’s the one thing your dream home must have? Every room, closet and porch wired for networking, speakers, audio, video, satellite, cable, phone and (of course) electricity.
    2. Twosome: improvement- What’s the one thing you would change about your current home? New bed, couch? New carpet or wallpaper? Or something major like an addition? I live in a condo on the 3/4 floor, if I thought I could get away with a hot tub on the balcony, that would be it. But I think it’s probably going to be a new bed, actually the bed isn’t old but I need a new mattress, maybe one of the spongy memory foam ones.
    3. Threesome: shows – Do you ever watch home improvement shows? Which one(s)? Do you actually learn anything, or is it simply entertaining? Not really into the home improvement shows. They are kind of bizarro, IMHO.
