So I bought an iPhone!

No not that iPhone. The iPhone that’s been out for a while, the one that Linksys/Cisco owns the trademark to (but debating that is not the purpose of this thread). It’s a regular old looking phone, kinda cellphone-ish, it’s cordless and you can carry it around the house and it connects wirelessly to your Windows PC and can make and receive Skype calls. Your Skype friend’s list shows up in the display and you can dial from there. I thought it was pretty cool and it was on the odd clearance rack at Target (the UPC on the box didn’t scan and the had an extra price tag on it, like they received it by accident but needed to tag it to get rid of it) it was a great deal! It’s even got a spot for me to plug in a headset!

I like Skype, it’s a great idea and even though I only intermittently use it, it always seems to work for me. You can call other computers for free from your computer to and from anywhere in the world (this includes conference calls and video calls). You can call land lines in the US or Canada for just pennies a minute with no monthly fees (or unlimited for $30 a year) from anywhere in the world. Calling other countries cost a bit more depending on the location. Getting a number where people can call you at your computer (no matter what computer you are at, anywhere in the world) is about $60 a year. So going on vacation, it doesn’t matter where you are just load up Skype and connect to the net and people can call you! Get several skype numbers, one that’s close to Grandma and one that’s close to the kids in college and you’re just a local call away for each of them.

Then phone’s charging and so I haven’t even used it yet. But I can’t wait to try! Continue reading

Why waste time and resources?!?

So Panera (which in my opinion is the fastest restaurant ever) has implemented using those little pagers they give you at restaurants when you have to wait to get a table. Usually they are calling my name before I even get to the pickup area so this seems like a total waste. It’s something else to handle while getting change and your drink and napkins and stuff. Plus these pagers are the ones shaped like coasters, you don’t really have anything to “coast”…

This post brought to you via free Wifi at Panera :)

No WiFi at Home..?

So I’m at Panera and there are all these college age students here with their laptops (I’m sure a few are older and a few are younger), more than I’ve ever seen here before. My guess is that a good portion of them are home from college for the weekend and their parent’s homes don’t have the high-speed internet access that they’ve gotten used to at college. So they’re here using the free WiFi. At least that’s my theory (and I’m sticking to it).

Premium Chicken Sandwich – The Thursday Threesome

Onesome: PremiumHave you tried any of the fast food empire’s ‘Premium’ sandwiches lately? Was it any good?
I just tried the new a Sirloin Steakhouse Cheesesteak Sandwich (sliced beef, cheese, onions peppers and some kind of parmesan sauce on a new bun/roll) at Arby’s but they don’t list it on their web site so it must be a trial of some sort. It was delicious and they sell it as a wrap too.
Twosome: ChickenChicken, beef, fish, tofu… What’s your dietary staple?
Mostly beef and chicken. If it’s fish it’s generally scrimp (or fast food). The Deluxe Chicken at Burger King is delicious too.
Threesome: Sandwich Let’s do lunch! Do we head for that fast food place? …or will noon find us over at your favorite deli noshing down?
Generally at lunch (M-F) is fast food, maybe a Panera (usually if I know I’m working late

Yeah! Sunshine!!!

I’m out and about running errands (free WiFi at Panera and a lemonade) and it’s gotten sunny out. After the fog weather advisories a few hours ago this is a very welcome change. I’ve been to the doctor (allergy shots), Target (good deals and some normal stuff), Kohls (some awesome clearance items) and the Sprint PCS store (they seem the think that Sprint is still going to release the ultra-geeky Samsung i-550 Palm OS phone!) all before I’m normally even done eating breakfast!

Later: Plus I got to go to the Apple Store (fyi, they just did a speed bump on the powerbooks) and I got to visit my mom at work and I washed my car…

Panera WiFi Tip

Here’s a tip for connecting to the free WiFi at Panera. It wants you to authenticate via a web page (just click to accept their rules) so if you try your mail program (or something else first) it will not connect to the net. So launch the web first and you should be okay.

Extra Macintosh Tip: It doesn’t seem to like safari to authenticate so I always launch IE first to authenticate and then use the browner of my choice…

Giving credit when due.

So when I surf I’ll be reading a page and see some interesting links and click them so the appear in a window under the window I’m viewing. I do this so I can continue reading and not have to wait for the page to load. I may not get back to the clicked page for hours. So if I find something interesting once i get there, it’s hard to post and say “hey look at this” and “found via ____” since I don’t have any idea how I got there.

RE: Blogs – 11

1. Have you ever blogged something you’ve regretted in the morning? Do you leave it? Delete it? Pray that no one reads it?
If I regret it, I’d delete it. I thinking of it as the Post-its of my life, they can be removed at any time.
2. Last week, RE: Blogs asked about the location from which you blog. This week, RE: Blogs asks for a photo of your favorite blogging environment. If you don’t have a camera ready – or aren’t willing to share a photo – – describe your favorite blogging place to the best of your ability
I blog from everywhere. I use ecto and it lets me save posts while off line, then I can manually post when on-line. I can always hook up my cell phone to connect and a few restaurants (Burger King and Panera) have WiFi.
3. What do you like most in a blog post by another blogger? Personal experiences? Fictional stories? News/Current events? Tech advice? Share some of your favorites from this week (either yours, or someone elses).
Personal experiences – either funny or drama, I wait for the next installment of their life. Tech advice is great, if it weren’t for others, I’d never use Movable Type as well as I do.
