So I came home and took a nap after all my errands (I feel great now). Since then I’ve watched a bit of TV and now I’m thinking of funerals. This wasn’t weird dreams, it was what was on the TV show (didn’t you hear, someone was going to die on Smallville).

I still remember being freaked out at my first funeral. Here’s why:

It wasn’t why you think, of course I was sad and upset at the idea that Grandma had passed away and all the normal funeral things to get upset about. We did the normal stuff: did the funeral home for one or two days, did mass at the church, drove way the heck out to the cemetery, did a little service in chapel at the cemetery and then we left. That last part was what freaked me out, that we left. I’ve seen this a million times on TV and at the movies the next part is that you go to the grave site and put lower the casket into the ground and throw some dirt and/or flowers on the casket. Come on, everyone knows this stuff that’s just what you do. Needless to say, they thought I was nuts when I asked about it.

I was fifteen or sixteen at the time and to this day this still haunts me. I think about it almost every time I see this happen on a television show or movie. To this day I’ve never experienced a funeral like this. So I think I’ve come to a decision: If it’s possible to still have funerals like that, then this is how I want my funeral to be. That might seem a little weird, but I am (a little weird).

So I know you’re thinking the winter holidays when I say gift certificates but really that’s not it. I’m thinking of my birthday which was ten weeks ago and that I finally just ended up spending the last of my gift certificates. And yes, I know that was ten weeks ago, but I didn’t want to waste them.

Yesterday I spend the last few at Best Buy for memory for my computers. After moving some around between a few I ended up doubling the memory in the one and increasing the other by 50%. I thought it was going to work out a little better than that (I thought the one had more memory slots) but you can still tell the difference on both of them.

I think most of the gift cards were for Technology or Books or Target (plus I had a few duplicate items that needed to be exchanged). Things I bought with the gift cards were:

  • Memory for the computers
  • Firefly on DVD
  • An astronomy reference card set (very cool)
  • iTunes (I had to return an Apple item and that worked out best)
  • Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
  • Smallville Season 1
  • The West Wing Season 1
  • Liz Phair’s new album
  • And I know there was another book or two…

Except for the Firefly DVDs, I think everything I bought was on sale! I’m a good shopper. :)

    Thank you everyone!

FYI – Here are MY FALL 2006 descriptions (I see the search engines keep picking up this older page and it’s 2006 now…).

Here’s a grid for the Fall 2005 TV lineup: We’ve got Eastern/Pacific and Central.

Here’s my issues (because I know you care) with the lineup:

    • Two and a Half Men is still on at the same time as Las Vegas.
    • Commander-in-Chief is on the same time as Sex, Lies, & Secrets (and Supernatural and Bones, but I’m not so sure about these).
    • Veronica Mars is on the same time as Lost.
    • Smallville is on the same time as Alias (and Joey, although I can live without).

There is a lot on there that I don’t know what they are so that may be a few more issues for me. I may have to learn how to set up BitTorrent to download my shows automatically if they are going to have so many conflicts….

So if you don’t watch Smallville you probably don’t care and if you haven’t watched last night’s episode you probably don’t want to read this. So it’s been bugging me that Lana Lang and Clark Kent haven’t been interacting much (if at all) and it’s been annoying that if they aren’t going to interact then get her off the show.

Previous to this season Lana was kinda like Clark’s (future) Lois Lane; now that they’ve brought a young Lois onto the show there is too much going on. Lois has this weird mystical story-line about an ancestor of hers and ties to her Jason’s (her boyfriend) family (her ancestor threated to kill the decedents of his ancestors, but I’m not sure if she knows this yet). It’s really been the drawn-out story-line from hell and since it’s mystical anything can happen: anyone can be possessed by anyone and anyone could manifest random powers (and I already don’t like the random kryptonite effects around Smallville) plus this has something to with Clark’s past also (some of the mystical symbols are also kryptonian). So what I’ve been waiting for is for Lana to ask Clark for help! She doesn’t know what’s going on, who’s truthful or not so she finally confided this to Clark as she’s packing to go to Shang-hi. To which Clark said “I’m going to come with you”, so I’m guessing we’re going to get some more interaction between them.

PS – At this point I’ve only seen the first 20 minutes so I’m guessing I haven’t given too much away…

So there has been complaints of product placement in television shows. It came up a few days ago in a meme question and I’ve seen it mentioned somewhere else since then plus I’ve been thinking about it a bit since Friday. I’m not sure what the problem is? We see product placement in sports all the time, in the background, on the uniforms, sponsorships of the show and who knows what else. I’m not sure what it matters when the hosts are drinking Coca-Cola on American Idol or someone on a fiction show is eating some brand name candy. Someone is going to start drinking Coke because Paula drank it on TV? What about when someone famous is drinking it on an ad? I’m thinking I’m not going to be any more motivated to buy Red Zone deodorant just because I saw Clark Kent with some in his locker on Smallville a few weeks ago. Although the ad stuck in my head (so I guess it worked on some level), but that’s just because they paused on it a bit too long the few times they showed it (it was on a banner at the Smallville High football game too).

So in someways I like the new season, but in others… It’s back to feeling like the first season, too many kryptonite monsters (i.e. Buffy the Kryptonite infected monster slayer). I was just starting to like Lois and now she seems to be off the show, I thought I saw her in some WB cast promos so I thought she’d be around a little longer.

The show definitely has more sex appeal. And uptight Clark just seems to be getting hit on/made out with/getting caught with too many women. While everyone else is lying to someone else about something. And it bugs me when Lana lies to Clark, they’ve got them set up as the destined lovers… (Even though we know he marries a different LL)

So to wrap it all up it’s kinda Buffy meets Smallville 90210. If you can handle it and keep track of the characters go for it!

But you have to love the slo-mo “bullet-time” effects when Clark rushes into action.

If you haven’t seen it at all here’s the brief synopsis (assuming you know that Clark=Smallville=Superman [someday]=Kal-El): Kal-El’s ships crashed 10 years ago mixed in with a meteor storm. Storm killed Lana’s parents, made Lex’s hair fall out, Kent’s found Clark. After 10 years the Kryptonite (which hurts Kal-El) has mutated things/people which tend to attack and the kids always save the day.

If you didn’t get the LL reference. We have Lana Lang, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor and Lionel Luthor. In the comics we also had Lori Lemaris, Linda Lee, ______ Lane (Lois’ sister) and many more. It’s a big old tradition.

After the great summer finale to SG-1 we got a great season premier for Smallville. Their premiers are generally odd in that it’s all of a sudden there months later. Lots of “stuff” happening: everyone is getting their memory back, coming out of their coma, returning from Kryptonian stasis and Lana grew up over the summer…

And two (yes two!) Lois Lanes. How’s that, you ask? Well we have the actress (Erica Durance) who plays new Lois, plus we had a cameo by Margot Kidder who played Lois in the 70/80’s superman movies. Plus they even gave me a little cliff hanger for next week.

This could be a good season… More (real) spoilers below.

And they broke a (supposed) rule for this show – “no flights, no tights”. Although there have always been hints that he’ll be able to fly. But they did it in such a way that it won’t be happening again.

PS – Did you know that Annette O’Toole (mom) played Lana Lang (as an adult) in Superman IV (the movie).

Onesome- Beginnings: Are there any television shows out there that you’ve watched regularly from the very beginning?
Joan of Arcadia, Smallville, Sports Night, Friends, Alias, Strange Luck, Roswell, VR5 and probably a few other sci-fi shows that didn’t last wlong.
Twosome- Middles: What about shows that you came into in the middle of the season but immediately grabbed your attention and turned you into a die-hard fan?
Actualy Friends was a middle of the season and but I was hooked. Mad About You hooked me for a while. I’m sure there is more
Threesome- And Ends: Recently, a number of big name shows have ended, Friends, Fraiser, The Drew Carey Show, and the cult hit, Angel. Did you watch any of the big finales? Have you ever been really sad to see a show go?
I was sad to see Sports Night and Roswell go. Every thing else was kinda short, this year I’ve lost a few: The Handler, Wonderfalls, I’m with Her, Century City and I’m sure there are a few more but I’d have to check my TiVo.
