Imagine that you are a guest in your own home. Which three things would you find most interesting or unusual?

  • The Leg Lamp (from A Christmas Story)
  • All the remote controls
  • All the books (and the inconsistency diversity of the topics)

    From The Daily Three Things

So Srah did this Year in Review thing. Take the first line from the first post of each month and list it out. I liked it. So I did it too! Clicking on the links takes you to all the posts in that month.

Jan) It’s the start of a New Year!
Feb) It’s been so nice outside this weekend.
Mar) Okay, so the Internet has hit rock bottom.

Apr) A quick evaluation on whether a technology is good or not.
May) You’ve been offered a full college/university grant, all expenses paid, for the school and study program of your choice.
Jun) When you wake up: Start the shower. Start breakfast.
Jul) Okay so I’ve heard of Book Crossing before but never got around to doing anything with it.
Aug) Found a new blogging service that I like.
Sep) I know, I never review books enough, even when I mention I’m reading them I forget to post info later…
Oct) I really want to see this movie!
Nov) There are only 55 shopping days left until Christmas!
Dec) So I had a quick (less than 24 hours) trip to Kalamazoo, it was supposed to be longer but it got cut short.

I almost forgot I have to go back to work for a few days this week. It’ll be quiet, I know I’m the only in my department. Lots of sorting and cleaning. I have to do a big initial pickup because they want to shampoo the carpet. A quick look to see if I want to rearrange and everything up off the floor. I’m taking all the paperwork off my desk (and the hutch and the chairs and the tops of the bookcases) and a bunch of file folders. If it isn’t from the last week and doesn’t go in a folder, it’s going in the trash!!! It’s not this bad anymore, but you get the idea. It’s just that I’ve thrown so much out lately and it’s still a mess…

Merry Christmas! We’ll ignore the whole spirit and joy thing for now and just talk about the important stuff: What did I get!!!

I got the Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed which is a huge book about maps and the evolution of them. I like maps* and I saw these guys on the The Screen Savers talking about maps and the book and they way they superimpose images and scan and do stuff to make old maps better…

I got shirts and ties and gift certificates and something from my amazon wishlist that didn’t arrive yet (but I don’t know what it is) and candy and wine and a 512MB(!) thumb drive and that’s all I can think of for now.

    * I’ve always liked maps. Maps and luggage. Digital maps, fold-up maps, road maops, etc. Always on the quest for the perfect map! For the luggage thing, I’m always looking for travel bags, backpacks, laptop cases, anything with lots of pockets to store all my junk and gizmos and stuff.

Mexican style food and appetizers for dinner were fun! The kids sure seemed to love it. To clarify these are kids that I bought gifts for last weekend’s holiday get together, so we’re just there to hang out and eat and watch the kids play (this is fine with me they’re hysterical to watch). So now the adults have wrapped up gift cards from the kids for me as a thanks (this isn’t normal). Which is great, I love gift cards, Target and Best Buy (like I’m not in those stores 3 times a week), I’m even conscientious about how I spend them; I won’t use them to fill my prescriptions, I’ll use them when I get music, movie or some accessory for my computer or iPod (then I can tell them what I got).

Okay so I digressed, again, but I buy the presents for the kids ’cause I want to. I find stuff I like and I’ll know they like and it makes me happy. I figure out what I wanted for one the girls and spent too much time/money on it, but it’s what I wanted, so it’s what I got. What I want (at most) is for the kids to make me something as a gift or thank you. Or to make sure you invite me to the birthdays, I don’t eat much and I bring good presents, what’s the problem…
Two of the points made me laugh since they apply to me:

  • It’s just that a geek’s approach to life tends to be if-x-then-y.
  • They don’t get hints.

It’ll probably be a little different when I have kids, whenever that will be. Maybe that’s all they need to do for me, secure a date with a single friend, that the exchange dynamic gets different and I (we) eventually end up with a kid or two (isn’t that the better conclusion)…

We’ve now hit the effect of being alone at Christmas and the Ambien sleeping pill is starting to kick in…
I wonder how all this stuff will read back tomorrow…

So it’s Chirstmas Eve (day) and I’m trying to finish stuff up. All I’ve got to get together is Mom’s loot and some clothes for tomorrow (and I’ve got to wrap Mom’s stuff still). I think everyone else that I’m seeing in the next 36 hours I’ve already exchanged gifts with (at least I hope so).

Tonight, Mom & I will go over my Aunt’s (or is it my cousin’s? they’re only three houses apart) and watch the kids go crazy, I think they’ll only be four of them (unless it’s at my cousin’s, where there might be kids-in-law). We’ll head to my Mom’s (eight or nine blocks away) and do presents and stuff in the morning. Then dinner with her boyfriend and then I’ll head home and let them do gifts, etc. Now that I’m thinking of it, he might be there tonight if he’s not working.

Every drive safe and have a great holiday!!!

So we did Christmas with part of the extended family and Kelli (one of my cousin’s kids) was all dressed up in different clothes that had snowflakes and different shades of blues. I just kept thinking, “Hey! She looks like my blog!”

I’ve got a new wintery snowy template for my blog! This is extra relevant since the fall theme was definitely out of date. Even more relevant as I was whining today that I want to go see Christmas lights but I want there to be snow on the ground when I do it!

So my grandfather passed away last week, just days after I commented on not seeing him and my grandmother enough. We’ll work out the guilt on that later (and we will). I’ve never done a funeral before with that side (my father’s) of the family. I had volunteered to do a reading at the church, I’m glad I did especially since no one else had volunteered to do any readings I got to do all three reading…

So it was pretty much the same as most funerals but a little more boring. Same church as usual, same place for food after (as usual), but less fun, I know it’s a funeral but I usually feel a little more like it’s a celebration. Nothing super different, just a few more jokes and stories and such afterwards (or even during). I was really ready for a drink by the time we got the restaurant, but they did the no smoking no drinking option; I’m not really sure why I’m mentioning the drink part but it’s days later and it’s stuck in my head so it’s out on this virtual “piece of paper”.

My cousin’s 11 month-old there and I got to play with her (once she warmed up to me) so that was great, she loved playing with the christmas ornaments on the wall and looking in the mirror. And I got to see all sorts of people that I hadn’t seen in a while and that was nice, I just wish we could do it more often than funerals and other obligatory days.

It was a relatively normal weekend but that stores/malls were packed. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet! And on the other had since I was there, and the sales were good I did by more than a few presents while I was out. Wasn’t my plan, but it’s nice to be ahead of the game!

What else did I do this weekend…? Oh I had a five (5) hour meeting at work on Saturday, that’s where the day went.

Otherwise I shopped, relaxed and slept. Right now I’m at the burger joint that has WiFi but it’s broken today :(

In a minute second I’m outta here and off to see the Bourne Supremacy.

Rats – I just realized I still need groceries too…

Imax.PolarSo I just got back from The Henry Ford and seeing the Polar Express and it was excellent. I knew it might seem strange but there were lots of action scenes. With the 3D with action scenes were wild. Oh and did I mention it was at the iMax IMAX?

If you have any interest in seeing this then go see it! Better yet, see it in 3D…

Kids would like this, my question is: Since the movie is about people doubting about Christmas, would it make some kids doubt it?

I really don’t remember the original story but it was great. Tom Hanks was the voice and model for several of the characters. Lots of music some new and some old. Be sure to pay attention to the Elf singing on stage at the end, he looks familiar…

There are only 55 shopping days left until Christmas! How does that make you feel? Do you shop on-line or in the stores? Do you try to get it all done early or are you a last minute shopper? Do you have a Christmas Club? Is the holiday season stressful for you or do you enjoy it? Describe any emotions or feelings you tend to have during this time of the year! For some, the holidays are a difficult time! For some, it is a joyous time! Tell us how you handle this time of the year.
I can’t believe it’s November already! I’ve already got some (very little) shopping done, a few books or kids things that I’ve seen on sale. Most will be done early, the rest will be last minute (mostly the people I just couldn’t find the “right thing” for and at that point I now “need it”. What’s a “Christmas Club?” It’s a little stressful for the required celebrations. It would be a lot more fun if I was dating someone.

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for! 60 GB and color and A/V out and syncs with iPhoto and I’m sure it even does more. Even more info here and here.

Capable of storing 20,000 music tracks and 25,000 photos. Album artwork will be displayed on screen when it’s available for a selected track. Photo albums will be navigated in a similar fashion to music playlists, and a slideshow feature will provide transitions with user-specified background music, similar to iPhoto.

It seems realistic (lots of rumors out there), 60 GB is the obvious next step, so is color. What to do with color? Cover art isn’t enough… let’s add iPhoto support. Hey, they gotta show the photos, let’s add video out support… Added bonus? If iTunes hooked (and converted) a lot of windows users, what will iTune and iPhoto for windows do? (this is still a secret, there has not been any announcement of iPhoto for windows)

So do you remember A Christmas Story? Do you remember when Darren McGaven (aka the Night Stalker) won “a major award”? Well I got one for my birthday this weekend! It’s excellent! Mark bought it for me and he doesn’t even remember that part of the movie. He had it shipped to his work and everyone saw it (there’s a photo on the box) and everyone came over to ask about it (I used to work there so they all know me). The box was even marked FRAGILE. If you haven’t seen this movie it’s a must see. WGN usually runs it for 24 hours straight the day before Christmas (or is it Thanksgiving?).

And did I tell you than it lights up the leg too!?!

A very cool lamp. Although it’s not like it matches any of my stuff. I better be careful or I’ll poke my eye out….

Here’s my 100 things about me page. (If you’re looking for my 101 in 1001 days list go here.) To follow the theme that I’ve found on many other sites, partially to see what I come up with and to let others see what I come up with. These are all the DVDs I own, many are music. I’m not a big movie collector but I’ve picked up a few here and there. Most of the movies were really good deals (many were under $10, if not $8) even with shipping but they still show my taste(?). I should have slightly editied since there were a few (Analyze This, The Mask) that I wouldn’t have bought but came free with a player. SO click on the icon to check them out.

FYI – ‘Flight of the Navigator’ is the best movie every (and it’s by Disney). ‘A Christmas Story’ is great too, I’m not sure why it isn’t in the list?!?

It was a nice weekend! Got lots of things checked off my list. Got a few things 1/2 checked off (so my place is a mess since I didn’t finish those projects, even though I started them). Went to a restaurant that I really like but can never remember… The takeout boxes are black styrofoam, looks kinda cool for leftovers.

Still have my Christmas tree up. But I really like the lights and I’ll have to rearrange if I take it down. :)

    Need I say more?

The kids were hysterically funny tonight. So many presents… They got a million on Sunday and they were already ready for more.

I had brought over a kit to make ornaments out of Lego-like pieces. They (4, 5, 7, 9 years old) were thrilled! They didn’t want to get up and go open presents. So if you see any of these on clearance tomorrow, be sure to pick some up.

Got to drive around a bit and look at some lights. There are a few streets around that put the little tea lights out in front and it was very nice. (It’d be better if there was snow!)

It’s here! I’ve been too busy to post (imagine that!) and I should be on my way to my Mom’s (my Aunt’s actually) but I needed to relax for a few minutes and thought I’d type for a few. It’ll be fun to see all my cousin’s kids tonight, I’m sure they have too many presents from Sunday but this give them some more to open. :)

I’ve got a few more things to wrap, one more present to find (it’s somewhere here) and maybe one more to buy (I meant to get Mom a charger for her new cell phone) depending on the lines…

Have a Merry Christmas to all! And please drive safe!

It’s so much fun to watch kids open presents for the holidays! They get so excited, why do we (adults) make it so hard for them by making them wait? It’s really great, the holidays are so much better with the kids running around. All the kids were extra good this year with hugs and thank you’s and such, that makes it all worth it…

And you never know what present is going to be the hit. Some 3D National Geographic ViewMaster-type toy made the rounds to all the kids and adults. So if you’re still shopping keep that in mind. :)

    Saw lots of friends today:

  • Still got to hang out with Heather and friends. Dad made a bunch of us breakfast. And we got a lot of snow on the west side (Allegan) of the state.
  • Had dinner with Judy in East Lansing. Got ice creme and did a little Christmas shopping too.
  • Barb &Karl were in town (from Indiana) and got a bunch of us together. Saw some people I had seen before and met a few new ones.
  • And I got to stop by the Apple Store today too!
  • Got to talk to some friends on the phone as I was driving around the state…
All and all, a great day.

So I’ve got my tree up with the lights turned on, the fireplace is going and I really enjoy just relaxing with them on (and the other lights off). I don’t even have any bulbs on the tree but I find it all oddly comforting… Besides television (and computers), fire and decorative lighting are some of the few things that people do while staring directly into a light source (think about it). I’m not sure why it’s so enjoyable, but it is! Just think of deer and headlights.

The backlight of the laptop I’m using is distracting (yet somehow appealing), so I think I’m going to wrap this up and watch the lights.
