A meme of threes on Thurdays.

1. Do you think you’re a good driver? Do you drive defensively or offensively? Why?
I’m a pretty good driver. I kinda just get into “driving mode” and move along. (My mom always gets nervous).
2. How fast do you normally drive? Do you always go the speed limit, or do you like to speed? Do you believe in the ‘flow of traffic’ method for speeding?
I probably go a little over, nothing significant.
3. What do you think of those people who drive while talking on the fone? Do you think it impairs their driving? Why/why not? Do you do it?
They’re generally idiots with a phone in one hand and a soda or smoke in the other. Get a headset!!!! It’s the holding onto their head that’s part of the impairment/problem. You see someone swerving weird or blocking an intersection or not turning and 90% of the time they’re holding a phone (generally they aren’t on a headset). If you don’t believe me just walk around the grocery store; the ones pushing a cart and holding the phone are a menace, the ones with a headset just seem schizophrenic since thy’re taking to themselves…
Bonus Question for Comments: What’s one thing that just drives you absolutely bonkers that people do when their driving (or how their driving)?
Not using their blinker!!!! It should be a $500 fine IMHO.

1. What do you think of space? Do you think we should explore it, or stay here on Earth and tend to matters here?
Definetly explore it. No question about it. (Because it’s there!)
2. If you could travel anywhere off Earth, where would you go? Why?
Assuming I’m on a tour of sorts I would assume Saturn would offer a bit of choices for this solar system. If I have no restrictions it’d probably be to see a black hole (up close of course).
3. Do you think we’re doing enough to facilitate science? Why/why not? What would you do to change things?
Not a chance. We need more budget for NASA and for the private developers.
Bonus Question for Comments: What are some of your favorite movies about space/take place in space/etc?
All the ones that come to mind are kids movies: Explorers, The Last Star Fighter, Flight of the Navigator (of course). I’m sure there are more but not coming to mind right now.

1. If you could write one law regarding the driving laws, what would it be? Why?
A $500 fine for notusing blinkers (changing lanes, turning, etc.). And double the fines for anything if they are practicing districting driving (cell phones, turned around for their kids, yelling at their spouse) if it’s important enough to endanger others it’s important enough to pull over.
2. If you could get the entire world to change one thing about itself (the way it works, the way we think on the whole, etc), what would it be? Why?
To be more tolerant of others and their opinions.

3. What’s your plan for ‘alternative energy source’ plan? Can it work in real life?
I think the hybrid cars would help in all sorts of ways. It’d help with pollution, depleting energy resources//dependancies and I’m sure more that I can’t think of. I’m sure people would just replace a few of their light bulbs with more energy efficient ones it’d help too. It’s less power and less heat generated (so it’s not competing with the air conditioner in the summer).
Bonus Question for Comments:If you could remove one law, what would it be? Why?
I can think of a few but non that I’m willing to start up a debate on.

1. Did you ever think you’d actually ‘grow up, get married, have a family, etc’? Did you? If not, why not?
Yes, definitely. I actually thought I’d be married by 27, no idea when the kids would come along. I have no idea how I ever came up with that number but somehow I did (it seems to me I was at the public library at the time). Still single and no kids (although I’m exploring adopting again).
2. What did you want to be when you grew up? What are you now? Do they match?
I’ve been doing computer “stuff” and training since I was 15 so it’s not big surprise where I ended up. At other various times during middle school I thought it would either be a chef or a photographer. I wish I had gone to the VoTech classes for the chef stuff instead of the computers (the tech was pretty out of date for the time).
3. Did you really think it’d be *this* hard?
It’s generally not so hard, unless I can qualify the boring times as hard…

1. When’s the last time you went on vacation? Where’d you go?
London, England. Short vacation – Chicago/Evanston, IL (which I’m currently en route to).
2. What’s your favorite mode of transportation to get to/from/go on vacation? Plane? Train? Boat?
I love the train! It’s a mile from my house. Today I left my house at 5:25 for the 5:34 train. Parked 100 yards from the train. And guess what? We left at 5:34!!!
3. How important are vacations for the human spirit? Do you think it’s healthy for someone to go 20 years without a vacation? Why/why not?
I need them. I think that some people don’t, it just depends.
Bonus Question for Comments: What’s your ideal vacation/time off from real life?
I really liked my last trip to Costa Rica. Mostly staying in one place not running around crazy from place to place. It might have to happen again this winter.

1. If you won the lottery, and could win as much as you wanted, how much would you take? What would you do with it?
A hundred million would probably be enough. Take care of family and friends. Some of the schools I’ve worked at (toss a couple of mill’ where I always would have put some tech dollars. The shelters and the crisis hotline where I’ve worked. I don’t know if I’d want to do some outreach here or in another country. Probably set up some institute to further technology use/adoption, if it was in another county (Costa Rica?) I’d probably need 200 million they have a lot less infrastructure. A very low number of students have technology and even less have Internet (and those are mostly around San Jose). I was just reading something on this today so it sticks extra in my mind. Oh! And I’d blow 20 million on a trip into outer space! Is Russia still selling rides?

2. If you could have any car/truck/environmental killing machine that you wanted, what would it be?
Actually I’d like an environmentally sound convertible (that I don’t have to refill every hundred miles).
3. If you could, would you want to be a professional student? Why/why not? If so, what would you study?
Definitely! Everything! Art, astronomy, a language or two, cutting edge technologies, did I say everything?
Bonus Question for Comments: Does it take a lot of money and goods to make you happy? How much/little? Why/Why not
Yes and no. I can live pretty simple, but I do like my techie toys (and my convertible). I could have cardboard furniture and a rusty car as long as I have my cool powerbook, iMac and home theater (and mp3 jukebox in the car).

1. On average, how many hours of sleep do you get a night? Is it enough, or do you need more?
7 if I’m lucky. I usally catch up 1 or 2 nights a week (with 10-12 hours).
2. Do you normally sleep pretty well at night, or are you a toss & turner, insomniac, etc?
I have a hard time getting to sleep, can lay for hours sometimes.
3. Do you sleep alone, or with someone? If you sleep alone normally, how do you fair when you sleep next to someone, or vice versa if it’s the opposite?
It depends. Sometimes I sleep better and sometimes not… “Excercise” before bed helps sometimes.
Bonus Question for Comments: What’s your ideal sleep schedule?
About 2am to 10am. That’s what it seems like my body really seems to like….

1. Do you like moving? Why/Why not?
It’s okay, it’s especially nice if it’s an upgrade!
2. Since you’ve moved out of your parents house, how many places have you lived in? Do you like to move from place to place, or do you just like to settle?
I’ve only moved twice after my eleven years schooling. But since I’ve left my parents I’ve moved about thirteen times.
3. What’s the best part of moving? What’s the worst?
The best is the cleaning and purging of ‘stuff’. The worst is that last bunch of stuff (junk drawers, countertops, etc.) that just gets dumped into a box and has to be sorted.
Bonus Question for Comments: If you could hire a mover, would you? Why/why not?
I’ve done the mover the last few times. I still pack they just move. It’s well spent money, especially my last move, from a 3rd floor apartment to a 3rd/4th floor condo. I had three movers their and they were grunting and groaning, it’s an easy check to write and It’s cheaper than you think.

1. Have you ever had a roomate? If so, do you like living with other people, or would you rather have your own space?
I only had long-term roommates once (for 3 years), otherwise it was just a few summers in college. A friend couldn’t decide if to share an apartment with me or a girlfriend. So we all ended up living together. It worked out great. They got the big room, they did everything together so they were gone 2/3 of the time and we have kinda-opposite schedules. Most of my friends didn’t even believe I had roommates! Besides that, they were great too!
2. If you’ve had roommates, got any horror stories? If not, if you had to, would you get a roommate, or get a 2nd job to pay for rent?
No horror stories. I’d get one if I had too. It’s fun occasionally.
3. Describe the ideal roommate.
Neat, has money to pay the rent, lots of single friends…
Bonus Question for Comments: What *is* it about having one’s own space that is so appealing?
I grew up a single child so I always had my own room and space. It’s nice when you want to move/do things that you don’t have to worry if someone else will care or be bothered by it. Very low concern / stress issues.

  1. Do you keep in touch with most of your family (internal and external) members? Why/why not? Here and there, I think I keep in touch less now that I moved back to the Detroit area.
  2. If you’ve lost touch with some of your family and friends, is it time to call them up and find out how they are, or do you even care? I haven’t seen them much lately but I’m doing Easter at my place this year so that’ll be fun. Many of them haven’t even seen my place.
  3. Are you afraid to contact someone that you haven’t had communications with in a long time? Do you think they’ll be pissed that you haven’t called in 5 years? Or do you think, “better late than never”? Better late than never. Sometimes it’s hard when you wonder what they are expecting, or vice versa…

Bonus Question: How do you react when someone (friend or family) that you haven’t spoken with (for whatever reason) in years contacts you? I always like it, it’s fun to catch up and see what people have been up to when you haven’t talked to them for a while.

  1. Is the world a better place today than it was 5 years ago? Support your answer. No. I feel the September 11 tragedy and the war and the finances of the country has really hurt us the last few years. Plus we’ve lost a shuttle our schools are suffering which means so are our children and I’m sure there are more than a few other things that I haven’t listed. I know this answer focused on the country and not the world but I don’t think they’ve been making tremendous strides the last five years in the rest of the world. Most five year blocks previously I’d say have gotten better.
  2. If you knew what the future held 25 years from now, would you want to continue life to that point even if you knew the outcome wasn’t pretty? Why/Why not? Yes! If I had the ability to see the future, I’d have the ability to change it. Heck, even without that power we have the ability to change it.
  3. Do you think our elders (we’ll put a cap on it and say 65 and older) ever thought the world would be like it is today? What will you tell your grandkids (or your friends’ grandkids) about your first 25-30 years on this planet? No, they never imagined it would be like today. It’s changed too fast for most of the masses before that time to have guessed. Many of them do not understand the world today. The futurists might have, but they’d be wrong too, we didn’t get as far as they thought we would.

My first 25-30 years? I got to learn as much as I could, I was there when the first computers start coming into peoples homes, we didn’t blow up the world, the cold war ended, I remember when no one had cell phones, answering machines or e-mail, I was able to travel when you could show up fifteen minutes before your flight and you didn’t have to take your shoes off, I was building web sites before people Yahoo!ed and Googled, we all learned what AIDs was, what computer viruses were and how fast things could really change.

  1. Who’s your favorite person in your family? What makes them so cool? Emily and Nathan. They are the babies of the family. Not much is cooler than that!
  2. What’s your favorite meal of the day? Why? Breakfast! Bacon, eggs and cantaloupe. It’s a good start to start the routine of my day. Even if I get up at 2 PM I generally still have breakfast. Waffles are better but they take too much time.
  3. What’s your favorite search engine? Can it cook your meals for you? Google! I hear they are acquiring iHop so it shouldn’t be too long before the cooking starts…

Bonus: You’re given on day to do any number of favorite things that you choose. What would your day consist of?

  • Breakfast
  • Rollerblading (around MSU)
  • A picnic
  • Shopping (successfully) at Best Buy
  • Eat Chinese (at one of my favorite places in Lansing)
  • Some time at Borders and their Cafe
  • Stopping by the Apple store (have you been there, it’s the coolest store)
  • Finding a really good deal (or something free) on-line
  • Being with friends for all of the above
