So I caved and ordered my $200 laptop, actually I had to order two . The only way to get one is to donate one, so you actually get one for yourself and a tax deductible laptop that is donated to a developing nation (total = $400). The Get 1 Give 1 (G1G1) program only lasts 5 more days (ends November 26) so order now.
As a “Give One Get One” donor, you will receive one of the first XO laptops to be distributed in North America. Laptops will be delivered on a first come, first served basis.
In addition, T-Mobile gives you one-year complimentary access to T-Mobile HotSpots (I think you can use any laptop there, not just the XO). So that’s an extra bonus too. The tax write off for part of it and a year of free hotspots (granted I wouldn’t have purchased it, but I will use it) give even more value to it. And I’ll probably spend a little more time at Starbucks and Borders now.
Here’s some more details from when I had mentioned this $100 laptop before and some reviews on the laptop and the program. I’m not sure why they’re limiting the window for when you can buy it or why it’s limited to the US and Canada. I just wish I had it for my next trip to Costa Rica….
I wouldn’t pay $400 for this laptop… which is the actual cost when you factor in the second one you have to buy to give away in the program. Mostly because I already have a very nice laptop.
HOWEVER, I would be much more likely to just outright donate $200 to give a kid in a developing nation a laptop… IF I could pick the place the laptop was going. I didn’t see an option for that, but surely there must be one??
Yeah, it is actually $400, I didn’t clarify that very well up top, I’ve since clarified that above.
I figure it’s a donation so that’s okay and the Tmobile access is worth a few bucks too. So I could live with that.
I’ve always wanted something with a extra high contrast screen that I can use outdoors so this will fit the bill. With that, the WifI and as an eBook reader it might fit some uses that I haven’t had before. If I can figure out a way to connect it to my cell phone for ‘net access I’ll be a happy camper.
I do wish it was lighter, 3.5 pounds is only 1.1 pounds less than my 12 inch PowerBook.
Unfortunately, you can’t pick the donating nation, I’m not sure why, since I’m sure that would make a few people happier about donating.
How long did it take you to get your laptop.
I just ordered it early this week. They haven’t started shipping.
They hope to ship by Christmas, but they make no promises.
