I'm Sorry...
I haven't been doing much traditional blogging much. I've been spending all my internet time playing on Seesmic.com, which is kind of a video conversation/video blogging site. I'll be back soon (days not weeks)...
All these video's will seem way out of context if you don't play the whole thread....Seesmic Updates

TequilaCon 2008
I really hope I can make it to TequilaCon 2009....
I'm sad I couldn't go (again).
While I'm just home relaxing this weekend, last week was cRaZy, next week will be semi-crazy and I just went on vacation and I go again in June.

Sunday already!
I had such good intentions on getting more Costa Rica blogging done (especially some more photos) the past few days and it didn't happen...
And here I am getting ready to head out to East Lansing to catch a performance of Avenue Q so I expect I won't get much done today either...

Yes, I'm still talking about Twitter
I thought this word cloud from what I've been tweeting was kinda cool. I created it at TweetCloud.com. These whow the most common words I've tweeted, bigger means I've tweeted more.

I'm on vacation right now, and I do miss Twitter a little bit. I want that constant stream of information. I also have been thinking of things to tweet and I can't.
I can compose a full blog post when I don't have 'net access (and I can even backdate it) but I can't with twitter. I probably won't use twitter at all while I'm out of the country. I'm not going to use what little internet access I have on that, we'll see, maybe I'd find it useful in a different way.

TweetStats
So I've been trying to use Twitter more and I found TweetStats to show me how much.
To give some background:
TwitterFeed is actually how my blog posts get cross-posted to Twitter so those really don't count much (started using this Oct 15, 2007). And I just discovered FriendFeed recently. But you can see that tweeting with Twitterific (w/phone and web) I've far surpassed that. Significant if you look at the below chart and see most of it's in the last month. And by looking at my blog post counts (to the left) for the last few months, you can see blogging has declined. But I'll blame the low blogging on 3 things: Twitter (but I am micro-blogging), busier at work (to tired at night to blog) and being sick this season.
Thanks to Julia Roy for pointing it out to me (via Twitter).

Understanding Twitter
So I've really been trying to use Twitter more. I read and tweet more at my computer than when I'm out. When I'm out I tweet some but don't generally read. I do have it set to get a text message on my phone automagically if someone tweets my name. If you don't know what Twitter is:
I really got on the blogging boat late because I didn't get it, but once I started I was hooked immediately. This isn't working for me yet, but I'm still trying. On GeekBrief I saw the folks at CommonCraft created a video called Twitter in Plain English and it's a pretty good explanation with interesting animation.
But it still feels like Instant Messenger (IM) to me, but only 140 characters. It's definitely more than IM, but it really just feels like the next step in its evolution. The clients feel like IM, and using the web interface at Twitter fells more and more like a web chat client.
The biggest difference is that you direct your message to everyone in your group, not to a specific person. So occasionally you see a comment directed to someone else that you never saw the preceding comment, so then you can go see what they said and see if it's someone else that interests you. You can send direct messages, but I don't think that's very common and I can never remember the command (it's "D TwitterUserName TheText").

Wordpress For Dummies - Review
I waited so long for WordPress For Dummies, by Lisa Sabin-Wilson, and it was well worth the wait. I had been wanting to learn Wordpress and had been a fan of Lisa's blog so it was just what I needed as a motivator.
It's a "Dummies" book so it's got that easy to use format. And it's a reference book so most of it is not meant to be read linearly. If you've always wanted to set up a blog or switch to WordPress this is the way to go. It explains it from the basics up to the advanced. It's step by step and it'll get you running on your own host or at WordPress.com with ease.
It covers Migrating to WP, 10 Great Free Themes, Ten Great Plugins, Using WP as a Content Management System, Understanding Templates and Plug-ins. It covers pretty much everything you need to know but those are the chapters I've read the most and use for reference. If you don't know anything about PHP you'll painlessly learn the bits that you do need to know for modifying templates (this is optional) and you'll have picked up enough for when you want to use PHP for other "web stuff".
As I'm writing this post, I'm flipping through the book seeing if there is anything I've missed mentioning. There are so many areas of WP that I haven't explored yet, I've read about them in the book and I can't wait to try out some of the other features!
Just about everything I've needed to know was in there, the only thing that I couldn't find was detailed info on custom-fields which was (probably correctly) considered too advanced for a Dummies book.
There are 3 different flavors of WordPress (they host, you host, and multi-user) and they all share multiple features so just pay attention to which flavor she's talking about and you'll be fine.
It's an awesome book! If you want to set up your own blog, self-hosted or not, WordPress is easy to use and WordPress For Dummies is the book to use.

WordPress vs. Movable Type
I've always been a huge fan of Movable Type, but I've been playing with WordPress on and off lately and I think it might become my new blogging platform for anything new I create. I'm not sure if I'm willing to export and import my old blog and lose a bunch of Google results because the pages aren't named the same or because of something else unforeseen.
Here's my whole comparison wrapped up in to two sentences -
I think WordPress is easier to setup and it's also easier for beginners to do advanced things with WP than Movable Type. From the other side, I think that doing really advanced things is easier with Movable Type, while doing ultra-advanced things are probably equal between the two.
The biggest thing I don't like in WordPress is how dynamic things are and if your web host goofs something up, the dynamic stuff chokes which would be your whole site; I've seen this happen with several different hosts. In MT I kept my main page and individual page posts static, and the rest dynamic so at least the whole thing didn't crash. Also, the dynamic-ishness of the pages slows things down a little. But it's so very easy, I can't even tell you how easy it was to do an upgrade (one tip: if you modify a default template to use, be sure to rename the folder it's in and you won't accidentally over-write it when you upgrade). On the other hand, when I post something to WP it's very very quick since it's not rebuilding things. That's really nice to be done as soon as you post.
So far it's also been much easier to do (incremental) upgrades with WordPress. It's actually so easy, I'm surprised they haven't added a few other steps which would make it one-click. It's really disabling the plug-ins, copying the new directories over the old and reactivating the plug-ins; I'm sure this could be made one-click to "halt" the plug-ins, copy from the path that you specify, clear the cache and start the plug-ins back up.

More Space for WordPress
WordPress.com is a place where you can have your own blog, it's got lots of great features and it's free! They do have some advance features you can pay for like your own custom domain name, more disk space and other great features.
Here's the newest great part: they used to only have free storage of 50 MB of files and they just upgraded your free space to 3 GB (that's 3,000 MB) so that's a heck of a free upgrade! It's not that 50 MB is all that small, but a bunch of photos from your 8-megapixel camera and you can fill it up pretty quick, 3 gig is a very generous amount of free space. Now they are selling 5 GB upgrades for the old price of 1 GB upgrades. If you already purchased a storage upgrade they've automatically increased the storage space.
One of the many reasons I'm liking the WordPress community more and more...

WordPress Weekend!
I've got a few posts about WordPress that I've never finished up (including a book review). So I plan to post them and get them out of my drafts folder. I'm writing this down so that I'll remind myself to finally get this done :)
Aren't you excited!?!

I Need a Graphics Tool to do "Live" Cropping / Zooming
I'm sure someone out there can help me with my problem, but I don't know what to call it so I can't Google it. I'm trying to create some banners that are 865x180 pixels (the specific size doesn't matter, that's just what I'm using today). I've got lots of images that are way bigger than that so I need to be able to zoom in and out and see what it'll look like if I crop it. I've been doing it with some other tools, but my zooming scales are limited with Graphic Converter (I need some in-between scales) and with iPhoto (I do want to do this on my Mac) I've got no decent way to see what the crop will look like. Graphic Converter almost does it, because if I'm close (but bigger) I can paste it in a smaller window and fine-tune it; but when I want to look at an image at 20% or 30%, it's not an option,
Obviously, I'd prefer to not have to get an ultra-exspensive tool for this. But there's got to be a better way than I've been experimenting with. I'm hoping a flash tool that I upload my photo to and it zooms around for me. Or maybe just using a tool in a way I haven't tried it yet...

Let it Snow!!!
So it's snowing and we're supposed to get a lot tonight (the "don't park in the street" siren already went off). I'm geeked about that since it doesn't seem like Christmas without it.
But I've noticed I've still got a fall theme up on my blog so I'll be changing that to a Christmas theme that I've used before (if I can find all the parts). I've been learning Wordpress and so far I've learned it's SO much easier to change themes in WP than in Movable Type...
So it looks funny over the next hour or so, I'm working on getting out the fall colors!

It's been 4 years since I started blogging.
It's been 4 years today since I started blogging. It wasn't really a plan. I had just looked into it for a bit and one day I had something to say and kept going...
I think this will be post number 1677 (that averages to a little more than 1 posts a day) and 2,299 comments.
Thanks for listening and commenting everyone!!!!! And if you've just been listening, speak up and say HI
I'm also guessing I've had about 1,000,000 spam comments deleted with via my different filtering systems (about 30,000+ spams deleted by hand).
I need a better way with MovableType to reply to a comment and also post the reply to the web site at the same time. (Anyone?)

Blog Advertising
I have started running some Text Link Ads on the left side of the page. I apologize that I 'sold out' for that, but I'd much rather have someone else pay for my hosting than pay for it myself :)
I'd just love to figure out how to make enough on-line from ads while sitting on the beach in Costa Rica. So consider these part of the "Gary Should Move to Costa Rica Fund"!
Actually, if you're shopping this holiday season and are going to shop at any of the above stores anyways, just follow any of my links to get to the only store of your choice and you can support my Costa Rica fund instead of letting Amazon (or one of those other guys) keep that commission?!?

Just so you know...
The time you see on these posts aren't necessarily when posted them. The time is closer to when I wrote them. Whenever I finally get access to the internet I can post them and they retain the original dates.
This also might get confusing since I may have typed something and not posted it but when I'm out and see an internet cafe and post something new. Then later I might actually get around to connecting my computer and posting the older note. So you might miss something, sorry about that but I generally try to keep them chronological to when I wrote them.
For example (actually, specifically), I wrote the entries about arriving in Montezuma and the phones yesterday but didn't have a way to post them. Then I wandered by an internet cafe to check mail but it was SO slow I posted the slow internet message and left. But today I have reasonable access so I'm posting all the entries I wrote yesterday (and the photos) but they'll appear before the slow internet message so you may miss them...
You better go find it since it does link to more photos!

Why I want to use WordPress...
So I've really been wanting to try WordPress for my blogging. It's been growing in use (at least the people I'm reading are using it) and more and more internet providers seem to be including it with packages. So it really seems to be a product to use, I've been a devoted MovableType user for just under 4 years and I'm willing to try something new...
A few reasons besides jumping on the bandwangon with everyone else (a lemming, I am not): I like the default templates more than MT's, I think it looks easier to use and set up for beginners (this would be for me helping other people, I like complicated) and they're not lacking any plugins (1,198 and counting). Also, it's time to learn something new and this like it's well worth learning...
My copy of WordPress For Dummies still hasn't shipped and I've bugged Lisa (the author) a few times about buying an autographed copy and now she's having a contest to give away a few autographed copies for her anniversary! So this is my post/entry to count as my entry for that...

WordPress for Dummies
WordPress For Dummies is coming out on Monday (a few weeks early), and it looks like it covers most of the new features that are in WordPress. I've been reading Lisa Sabine-Wilson's blog (JustAGirlInTheWorld.com) for a few years, but generally the tech info doesn't help me since I'm not a WP user. Since I've been wanting to try WP for a while now (I've just played with it a little bit recently) this will help me on my way. So keep an eye out and pick up a copy (or order it on-line) when you get a chance...
I just ran up to Border's to make sure it wasn't on the shelves already and it wasn't out, so I'll leave my pre-order with Amazon (and save 5% since it's a pre-order and the price is guaranteed if it drops).
It's actually in to be shipped with Three Fallen Women by Amy Guth who happens to be another blogger (bigmouth indeed strikes again) that I read. Gotta order $25 or more to get free shipping so it seemed a good time to get it...

Spam has been insane lately
In the last 60 days I've been averaging about 1,000 spam comments a day, that's significantly higher than normal. Actually the last few weeks it's been more like 1,500 a day, the number has just been climbing. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to check daily stats. A year ago I was only averaging about 300 a day. Hopefully, I haven't been deleting any real comments....
Update: In the last 23 hours I've received/blocked another 4,200 spam comments/trackbacks (and moderated a few hundred)..

I Revise My Blog Posts (sometimes).
So I'm always editing my posts. Generally, just in the first hour (or two) but occasionally (rarely) up to a day later. I'll see little things I want to change/correct or I'll notice typing errors. Sometimes I'll remember something I left out and I'll add it. I'm trying to make the blog post better, more readable and more complete.
I don't change the slant or idea of something I had but I'll firm up the idea sometimes. Sometimes I wonder how that info gets around the 'net though. I know some people will read me via RSS or Atom or something, but once their software grabs my feed, if I change the article do they get the latest version if I don't revise the date (and if I do revise the date do they have two copies?)?
I know sites start to index pages and RSS feeds and update Technorati and other sites like that and I'm not sure what version those end up with in the end, or how often it takes to re-index those files.
I guess when people comment they see the full and latest post, but I'd have to assume they don't really notice...
REVISION LOG:
1 - minor correct.
2 - took out a short paragraph about my RSS feeds, I forgot they were dynamic now; that's a bigger change than normal (see I was still thinking about it while cooking so I checked and corrected it).
3 - Minor structure and a spelling error.
(I think I'm done now)

Jott is So Cool!
So many times I wish I could call someone late at night or early in the day to leave a message without waking them. THere are some services that delay delivery like this, but they're (at least in the past) costly and slightly difficult.
Enter Jott: It lets you set up a list of people on-line. You call Jott say who/what you want to Jott (you put yourself in the list too) and then leave a thirty second message and it sends it to their e-mail. Did I leave out that it very accurately transcribes the audio file into text for you too?!? And it's free?!? And it includes an audio file link too, just in case the transcription is garbled. Think about that before I tell you what else it does...
It'll post it to a blog for you too (Blogger, WordPress (even if self-hosted), TypePad, LiveJournal), it'll Twitter and Jaiku it for you too and post it to a Yahoo! Group and 30 boxes and you can use it to get Zillow (home value) quotes too. And it'll set up reminders for you too. It's all hands-free with your phone. And it's free!
I just posted a sample Jott for you to read, if you listen you can hear a slight mistake but it's close enough, you've never know unless you listened to it. Other than the sentence in bold that says to read this message, it's just cut and patse. FYI, the sample is a cheat, I really posted it to WordPress and just copied the post here for demonstrations sake. It currently does not work on Movable Type, I think it's just the way MT handles multiple blogs, but since it uses XMLRPCs pretty close to the other blogs I'm hoping it's a simple fix (but it's beyond me).
You must try this!!! I've get it set for a few friends, my work e-mail and my home e-mail so I can just call with reminders for me or to get free 30 second transcriptions of text for e-mail that I need to send back at the office.
Sometimes it does take a few minutes (no more than 5 minutes, usually 2 minutes) for the Jott to get transcribed.

Blog Cloud on your Shirt
I thought this was kinda neat, SnapShirts.com will read your site and create a blog cloud and print you up a shirt. It's nothing fancy but pretty easy to do.
They'll e-mail you the image to use if you want too. If you've never done anything to generate your word cloud, it's easy to do and interesting to see what comes up.

DaveCago2 - Chicago Blogger Meet
So the bloggers met in Chicago again for DaveCago2, about half of us met early June 2006 and we had a bunch of new people too (but we were down a few too). Here's the "blog roll call" that I'm pleasec to be a part of - Dave, Kevin, Jenny, RW and Mrs. RW, Ariana, Ajooja, Birdcolor, Diane, Kilax (who hand codes her blog!!!) and me. Several brought spouses (or spouses-to-be), it easier to not mention who than to remember who blogs (or doesn't blog) their private life. I hope I didn't leave anyone out, it was so hard to keep track of everyone...
Dave made us lanyards and had buttons and shirts and it made me feel like it was Christmas, I'm just happy with meeting new people. We ate at Pizano's Pizza on The Loop (near Millennium Park) and we got a bunch of different pizza and lots of (different) drinks. Then we wandered around and found another place for more drinks (Congress Plaza Hotel, the Gazebo Ba I thinkr), that too a while since most places didn't have space for all of us. It was great to put a face and voice to some of the bloggers and just chat and get more info on stories we've heard and stuff like that.
Neither restaurant or bar had drinks like Mike's Hard Lemonade or Smirnoff Ice and I was way above my daily caffine limit, so I hard to drink Long Island Iced Tea, it was my only option (really).
I do have photos, but I'll have to get them up later. I've been running around all day and I'm too tired to take a chance at accidentally deleting photos.

Great time in Chicago
Once I got into Chicago yesterday everything went completely smooth. I got food, I got checked into my hotel immediately, showered and managed to hook up with Kevin and Dave and we went over to that Apple Store to check out some eye candy (iCandy, get it?!?) and wandered around a bit before meeting up with the bigger group later. I had a blast with all of them and I'll expand on that later, but I'm checking out of the hotel and I thought ager my other problem post the last few days I'd mention that all is well.
And today I feel a whole lot better than I thought I would after all the Long Island Iced Teas, so that's a bonus too...

A Minor (but Quite Annoying) Accident
So I'm on my way to Chicago to see a variety of bloggers (to see who, follow the updates over the next few days) and I stop in Kalamazoo (Michigan) for some gas. After I get off the highway, I'm driving along and the truck in front of me swerves and I see a tire hurtling towards my car. I swerved but it managed to clip my bicycle (which is on the back of the car) and and rip it off the rack and drag the bike for a little bit before I'm able to pull over.
It does turn out there is a Jeep minus a tire that I didn't notice during my swerving, turns out it was out on a test drive from an auto repair shop. They said to bring them the bill for fixing the bicycle and the rack. They sent me to a local bike repair shop and the end result is they've done $90 in repairs and then decided that I should get the bike replaced and it's 3 hours later and I'm still in K'zoo. Everyone is closed now, and the repair shop is closed for the weekend and I didn't think to get a home number.
Arrgh!!!! Why do accidents happen on the way to places and not on the way home? Of course it could have been way worse but the point was I'm bringing the bike to Chicago for the purpose of biking. I would have taken the train otherwise, I love the train, the station is a mile from my house and I don't have to worry about traffic or paying for parking, etc.
On a side note I'm in Bennigan's right now, who has free WiFi (always a bonus) which I'll keep in mind for the future, eating their delicious Guinness Glazed Chicken Stir Fry. Yummy food and the ability to access the 'net always helps!
This was supposed to be a nice relaxing weekend and now I'm pretty cranky and stressed now. And did I mention that that I'm three hours behind schedule now? I'll be better tomorrow, I'm just venting for now and telling you about the exciting part of my day. Now to decide how much further I should drive tonight...

Movable Type 4.0
So Movable Type 4.0 is out. I thought it was odd that you can't purchase a personal license any more, just a business one. Don't panic though, you can still get a personal license for free but purchasing it used to get you "official" support and (it looks like) that's not available. But I was mistaken, for $49 you can get a year of support(see Anil's comment below) you just have to buy it from the business page. I really don't think I ever used the support (or at least not very often) so not a huge deal, but I think it's odd that it's hard to realize that you can buy support you just have to go to the business page. And I still think it's weird it's cheaper to buy two 5 user licenses than one 10 user license.
Plus, come fall they plan to release some kind of OpenSource version this fall, which will be very interesting...
On a side note, while I love Movable Type and I'd love to upgrade, I'll have to wait for the 4.1 release, I keep my installation too complicated and installing always brings the bugs to light (old plug-ins that break, bugs that I used to my advantage that might be fixed, and obviously the possibility of new bugs) I'll wait for the revisions so it's one less thing to worry about. Plus, I'm really afraid MT-Blacklist will stop working; it still deletes hundreds of messages a day for me with no intervention (since May of 2005 it's deleted way over one-third of a million billion spam messages that I've not even had to glance at) that with SpamLookUp keeps me sane.
Although, I must point out, everyone on-line seems to be saying that MT 4.0 is pretty painless to install...

All over the place
So I've been all over the place lately. Geographically and just a lot of stuff going on (all things are good). I've been up north, done a variety of odd things to my car, seen movies, been reading, found some good sites and I've got a whole lot of "stuff" to blog about. I've got lots of photos too. I've also had a bit Internet connectivity withdrawal, I've either been too busy to surf or on a island (literally) but I'm all better now...
I just need a little down town to catch up with it. Hopefully in the next day or so (or at least by the weekend) I'll get caught up.

1 and 1 downtime (AGAIN!). 1 & 1 has great service when it works but when they aren't working, they have lousy support...
It went down again. And it took two calls for someone to be able to tell me they are aware and fixing it. They need a way to keep customers all up to date. Have they ever heard of a status page (or a blog)? I wouldn't mind any downtime if I could check on it in just a few seconds.
Now it seems as if my permissions are goofed up in some directories.
I'm not sure why you aren't/weren't seeing all the post content all the time...
I'd get rid of them if they weren't so awesome when they were working!!

I've fallen off the edge of the world and I can't get up...
I'll be back, it's just been extra cRaZy and I haven't had time to read blogs let alone post much. I'll be back in a week (give or take a few days)...

So So Busy Lately...
It's been extra cRaZy lately:
Hmm... Putting them all in a list I realize there are more work related items than life in general, have to think about that...
I go have good stuff going on, most (all?) of the busy personal stuff has been good, it's just been making life busier. I haven't spent as much "fun" time on the computer as usual, certainly not much time blogging lately, but I think things will calm down soon, but we are still getting into the end of the year crunches at work. That's all for now, just a life in general update, not too exciting but you know I'm alive...

What's Wrong With MySpace...
Forget that it lets you create awful looking pages and that it's ultra slow (partially due to the large quantities of photos and slideshows). We're just talking about normal software problems that would probably save them bandwidth if they fixed/tweaked things (and make our MySpace lives easier and faster). Let's get everyone to stop wasting clicks and using it better (which will stop wasting bandwidth!). I might even spend more time there if it wasn't for all the wasted time...
So here we go (I hope Tom is listening):
I really hope I'm not missing an easy calendar solution, I'll feel kinda silly if I did. If I'm complaining, I suppose it begs the question why am I using MySpace? Because they've got my local bands convinced it's the only place to list their calendars. And occasionally I follow a few other clicks while I'm there...

Why I hate 1 and 1 web hosting!
I love 1 and 1 web hosting, I really do. Great features, great price, all sorts of configuration options and cheap domains ($5.99 a year). They've got decent reports and now they'll automatically mail me stats. Some of their web interface stuff is a little slow (it's too fancy) but it's got lots of options so I can live with it.
What I hate is their lack of customer communication:
They have great up time and I understand that things happen, but had I known there was a major upgrade I could have:
I still can't figure out what took them so long to fix it and I'm only really annoyed because of the lack of communication. An e-mail that apologizes for it either earlier in the process or even after they fixed it would have gone a long way with me...
FYI: To clarify, they we mostly down for about two-and-a-half days...
