New Lunar Background

moonSo I’ve gone grey. I mean my blog has gone grey. I’ve gone with some dark colors. The moon in the background (it’s almost not there today) is from the US Naval Observatory and should change as the phases change. We’ll see how well that actually works in the next week or so. Here is some more information on moon phases.

At the same time I cleaned this template up a little. Comments/templates should look better and the site should be a little more consistent. I thought I had done some of that already but maybe I overwrote it… Please let me know if you have any viewing problems (especially if the greys are too close together to read). It looks like there is still an issue with the search results page, it’s readable, just not 100% consistent.

Why you shouldn’t put your picture on the ‘net

whynopictureonnetI think the page speaks for itself – http://www.smlinks.com/sotw/why/. This link appears to have been password protected (June 2004). I don’t have a password nor do I know how to get one. I have no control over these pictures…

It was this kid’s image photoshopped into a few dozen different images (and it include the original) like the sample I just attached, Nemo and more. Here’s a sample I managed to find on-line. If anyone knows where this might be archived, I’ll change the link…

Movies and oil – saturday-8

These questions are from Laura at the saturday-8.

1. today i am going to see the movie “troy,” as it stars my favourite actor of all time, the british sex god sean bean (says laura). are you planning on seeing it? why or why not?
Not really. It looks really long. I’d like to see the Trojan Horse scene though (duh!).
2. the other day i purchased gas for $2.07 per gallon. i about threw up. what is the current gas price in your area? (please specify grade)
I put in 87 octane. It’s just gone over the $2.00 mark, which just kills me. I’m thinking I was seeing $2.03 and $2.07, this was the Deaborn (Detroit, MI) area.
3. sean bean is my lust, and the german actor thomas kretschmann comes in at a close second. who are your first and second actor/actress “loves”?
Liv Tyler: ever since Stealing Beauty and Mary Louise Parker: ever since Fried Green Tomatoes. I’ll add Julia Stiles (but I don’t know what I first saw her in) to that list too, since #5 just made me think of her too…
4. i am going to canada via syracuse, ny in july, and had to purchase my tickets WAAAAAAY early because we’re afraid the ticket prices will go up dramatically due to the rising oil prices. are you travelling this summer on a vacation?
I keep thinking I need to make some plans. Chicago? Toranto? London?
5. is there any movie this summer that you’re looking to see this summer, or any books you want to read that are going to be printed & released this summer? tell us about them…
I’m looking forward to Spiderman 2, which is funny since I wasn’t looking that forward to the first and it wasn’t that incredible. I’ve been liking Will Smith’s movies so maybe I, Robot will be good. I just saw a preview for The Borne Identity sequel (Borne Supremacy?) looks fun too.
6. what is your favourite vacation destination, and why?
Costa Rica! It’s warm, relaxed and it’s got two oceans! It’s really enjoyable, the not knowing Spanish is a little troublesome sometimes but dealable. The people are friendly and it’s warm.
7. have you heard about netflix.com? if so, have you joined/are you planning to join, and why/why not?
I’ve tried it a few times before. It’s excellent if you watch a lot of movies, I should give it a try again, it’s been a while. I liked it better when it was just individual rentals. (For those who don’t know what it is: $20 a month gets you three DVD rentals as soon as you return one, they send out the next on your list. Postage is included).
8. are you a good flier? i have problems on takeoff, but landing and flying are no problem.
Flying is generally no problem (a little air sick, but rarely). It’s dealing with the airports and security that makes me crazy, showing up two hours early for a ninety minute flight is counter-productive. I love the train, just show up a few minutes before, no parking problems, lots of room, very relaxinf.

Top 100 Movies

This is an easy meme. Take this list of the top 100 movies from the IMDB and bold the movies you have seen. (I’m not sure where this is originally from). This IMDB list is from May 2004. My “have seen” list is as follows…

More Movable Type

This is a bit of a followup to my earlier entry on the new pricing scheme at MT (which could have be subtitled “whiners begone”). Read Melissa’s post, she made it pretty understandable when she summarized up Mena’s followup post (which clarified a few things and even retroactively removed a thing or two from the EULA). I’m sure they lost some business, there were too many upset people yesterday.

    Highlights of the update

  • Some of their choices were made due to results of a survey (which I failed to answer). If you combine two or three blogs into one (and they aren’t used sepratly) it only counts as one.
  • The dual processor rule should not have been in the EULA.
  • You are not required to upgrade to 3.0 and you only have to obey the liscence as to when you agreed to it.
  • You can add individual author/logs to the personal license for $10.
  • Old archived blogs don’t count.

Mena says: “Furthermore, it is not our intention to stiffle the creativity of our users. So, if you have a great weblog that uses 11 weblogs seamlessly to appear as one site or weblog, you should not be penalized.”

I feel bad, I bet Mena and Company lost some sleep yesterday (or maybe they keep a bar at the office).

Ages – Weekend Wonderings

1. What do you think legal drinking age should be? Why?
Twenty-one is okay, I’d be fine with it lower if we could know that they wouldn’t drive. We just need to enforce it better and enforce over-drinking better. Maybe it they should have a drinking permit and it’s very easily revokable.
2. What do you think the minumum age for voting should be? Why?
Since they don’t vote, I’m not sure what it matters. If the schools taught government better it could be lowered to sixteen.
3. What minumum age do you think someome should be before they’re drafted to war? Why?
Somewhere in the eighteen to twenty-one range. Younger is nicer since they don’t have a family (i.e. kids or spouse). But I’m a bit older than that and I still don’t have one…
& an extra…
4. Do you think the draft should be implemented now for Iraq? Why?
No. But I’m not aware we need more people. Besides, we’d have to train them and I hope we’re out of there by then.

From Weekend Wonderings.

That wasn’t the question.

In case you weren’t sure, this story is a typical situation with me. You notice how she thought she was in an argument about something important…

MovableType 3.0

MovableType released their new version of blogging software and just about everyone has gone through the roof. They’ve got a new pricing scheme and guess what? It’s not free any more. And everyone is whining. The software has only been out for a few hours, it’s not like everyone is desperate for an upgrade. Many folks seem like they are going to jump ship immediately?!? The biggest feature seems to be the registration for comments which not many people seem interested in.

My favorite whine is: “it doesn’t have that many more features and it costs too much”, well, keep using the version you’ve got then.

I probably won’t upgrade unless it’s got some great feature in it. But I don’t rush out and buy the latest version of anything the day it comes out either… I might switch over to a different product and I might rave about it when I do, but I don’t think I’ll whine about MovableType when I do (especially if the only thing they screw up about it is the price/marketing).

I love MovableType, it’s the only blogging software I’ve tried but it seems that’s what all the cool kids (i.e. smart) are using. I mean I really like it, it’s great. I have see a few other things but they seemed a little more complicated but I may peek into it some more. It’s fun from a programming standpoint, it’s flexible and I really have been having a lot fun with it.

I gotta ask again. “What’s wrong with your current 2.661 version of Movable Type that would make you migrate to another piece of software?” I haven’t noticed anyone complaining that 3.0 has (crucial) features they want and can’t afford.
