My Favorite Things – Sunday Brunch

1. What is your favorite color?
Hmm.. I usually work with beige’s and browns not ’cause I like them but because they are easier to match… MY favorite color lately has probably been orange. I’ve got a few short-sleeve shirts, but my favorite is the bright orange sweat shirt that looks like it belonged to a cone on the side of the highway.
2. What is your favorite piece of clothing?
I llike my docker-like pants with all the pockets. Places for my keys, phone, camera, money and other things that I don’t have a place to put them since I don’t have a purse.
3. Where is your favorite place to eat out?
There are two chinese places in Lansing that I like Charlie Kangs (Beef Broccoli or Sweet and sour Shrimp) and J.P. Express (Pineapple Chicken). Locally I’ve been liking Friday’s (see below) and the bar around the corner from my place, Bamboozle’s.
4. What is your favorite meal?
I’d have to say one of the few listed above and I’ve really been liking Friday’s for some of the Jack Daniel’s meals at Friday’s. The best is the Sesame Jack Chicken Strips.
5. What is your favorite sport or recreational game?
No. I’m more of a Dominoes (or recently Scene It? the DVD game) kind of guy. Oh wait, can I count rollerblading?

Alien Religions – The Saturday Slant

This week a Vatican astronomer postulated about the existance of extra-terrestrial intelligence and what such existance might mean to not only human religion but to alien religion–and cross-pollination between the two. The astronomer, Guy Consolmagno, described three scenarios: “We find an intelligent civilization and there’s no way in creation we can communicate with them because they’re so alien to us; we find the intelligent civilization. We can communicate.” And: “We find a dozen civilizations out there, and a bunch of Jehovah’s witnesses go up and convert them all.” An anonymous person on Slashdot then took Consolmagno’s comments a step further: “As agents of free-will, the aliens are self-aware of good and evil, thus convertible to some terrestrial religion. The question of whether an alien civilization might convert Earth to their religion, or become a religion unto themselves, is left unconsidered [by Consolmagno].” I entreat you to explore what the Vatican’s astronomer did not. Extra-terrestrials and religion: what’s your Slant?

I find this particularly interesting, why? Because I was just reading about this a few hours ago. Here we go, back to Robert Sawyer (kind of a Canadian Michael Crichton). He ties a lot of this into his books. In particular a book called Calculating God. Here’s a few pages from the middle of the book and chapter one.

Here is the key part:

Apple Security Update

Be sure to do a software update to get the new security update on your OS X.2 or X.3 system. My question is: Why did the update come out on the 21st and it’s dated the 24th? Strange…

UPDATE: It looks like it might not fix everything…

More info…

Don’t laugh at this…

Twenty years ago (maybe even fifteen) this would have been heaven. Imagine… Seven MB of removable storage…

I remember somewhere around that time some had hook a ten MB drive up to an Atari computer (via the joystick ports), I’m sure that was a $2,000.00 box at the time. We’ve come a long way since then. I’ve ten times that on my keychain and it’s a heck of a lot faster and smaller!

Site Modifications

So I’ve totally redone this site in PHP. You shouldn’t get any .HTML files any more, if it does it should automatically redirect you. But if you do notice (even if it redirects you) any internal links that have .HTML in them (or you get the big if you can see this then… message, please leave me a message (e-mail or in the comments). I’m really afraid of links back to specific entries not working (with from other sites or from Yahoo!/Google). Thank you!

Feast One

Appetizer
What time do you usually wake up each day? If you could choose your wake-up time, when would it be?
6:45 ish. I’m more of a night person so 10 am would work well for me.
Soup
When was the last time you bought groceries? What store did you go to? Name 3 things you purchased.
Last Monday. Farmer Jack. Eggs, OJ and Cantelope; pretty much things I buy every visit (bacon too!).
Salad
How many books have you read so far this year? Which was your favorite and why?
Books! Probably a couple dozen. My favorite was Hybrids, the third part of a trilogy by Robert Sawyer (kind of a canadian Michael Criton). It was a great series and they went in a different direction than I thought they were going (which was good, since I didn’t like my guess).
Main Course
What is something you consider to be very elegant? In particular, what about that item/place/person conjures up the feeling of elegance?
Delicate, perfect, breakable, unique, crisp…
Dessert
Who taught you how to drive?
I took driver’s ed somewhere, but I pretty much had the idea down by then from watchign and motorcycles and such.

I Got the Music in Me – Friday Forum

1] You’re making a CD mix titled, “The Soundtrack of My Life.” Which songs would you include, and why?
Specific songs? I don’t know all of the titles but I know I’d start with one or two from each of the following. Tori Amos (something from the early years), Indigo Girls (early), Sarah Mclachlan (two or three from Sufacing?), Carly Simon (the cover she did of the theme from Casablanca), Jewel (the first two albums), Alanis (the one of the City of Angels soundtrack), Big Bird doing the ABC song. I might look up specifics later, but it’s been a long week…
2] What is your favorite song right now?
Probably one of the new Liz Phair songs, she’s been getting a lot of play by me lately. Maybe “My Favorite Underwear” that one always makes me smile.
3] You’re feeling down, sad, lonely, frustrated, angry … which song[s] do you play to help yourself feel better?
Usually some older stuff. Either an 80’s retro mix (the more dance type stuff, but always including Tainted Love) or a GoGo’s deluxe mix (GoGo’s, Jane Weidlan, Belinda, The Graces all shuffled up).
4] Do you watch the TV show “American Idol”? Why/why not? Who do you think will win the competition?
Not at all. It just doesn’t pose any interest to me.
5] Do most of your friends generally share your taste in music?
A lot of my female college friends like the earthier stuff, the guy friends liked the retro 80’s stuff. Current friends all like a little bit of one part and someone likes part of another.

I keep thinking am I picking songs from various eras to be the sound track or do I actually want to words to convey my life? I’m sure I’m over thinking this… But I’ve got a little bit of both…

Your computer – Weekend Wonderings

1. What kind of computer do you have? Describe it for me! (Like how big is your hard drive, how much memory you have…)
My main G4 PowerBook is work’s actually, but it’s be come my main one everywhere. The 12 inch screen makes it so portable! One GHz, 60GB, 768MB RAM, CD/DVD-R/W, 802.11G. It’s nice. It’ll plug into my cell phone for Internet access too! The desktop is pretty much the same thing without the wireless and a few extra external drives with a 1.3GHz G4 upgrade card. Remember that 1.3 GHz on a G4 is faster then a P4 (probably more like 2.0 (or 2.5?). And I have an XP machine mostly so I can synchronize my Palm OS phone and go to web sites that people weren’t capable of making OS X compatible…
2. How long have you had your computer? Do you plan on getting a new one soon?
The laptop is new, so no. The desktop recently got that upgrade card so I’ll wait a while for that. The XP machine is fast enough to sync my palm so no. I’d like something faster to control the music for my stereo…
3. How many computers do you have in your home? Are they networked/firewalled?
Hmm… I’ve got another old one running Linux (just for fun) and another old one controlling the music on my stereo. Firewalled? Heck yeah, I’ve got two hardware firewalls. They’re cheap enough these days! Battery backups (on everything) and an alarm system to go with the rest of it.
