Aliens of the Deep

AliensofthedeepAliens of the Deep in 3D was great! IMAX movies are always great especially when in 3D. It’s James Cameron doing a Jacques Cousteau type movie thousands of feet down. They’ve got beautiful footage some interesting background details and some occasional special effects. They spend a lot of time talking about how some of this is like exploring other worlds and how some of what they do on the ocean floor would be used in deep space (especially if looking in water for life). A bit of how the extremes of space and the ocean can be very similar. Did I say the 3D looked great?!?

The Past – Wednesday Mind Hump – Week 35

01. Can you remember where you were in life ten years ago? If you could travel back in time and whisper something to yourself ten years ago, what would it be?
I do regret not being married and not having kids. So it would probably be to work on marriage and/or adoption. I was pretty happy at the time so I might not listen to me…
02. You inherit a large piece of land and decide to build a theme park a la “Disneyland, Sea World, etc.) What would you name your theme park and what would your mascot be?
GeekWorld and the mascot would be Techie the Turtle.
03. Okay, let’s have it! What’s the craziest, most impulsive thing you’ve ever done. Remember, we have insane youngsters amongst us so if it’s risque, clean it up.. *wink*
Climbing on the windowsill from one room to another on the 10th floor of the dorms at the U of British Columbia, I was probably 15 at the time.
04. We all have them … bad days. If you were having a bad day what or whom would you turn to for comfort?
A female friend or ex-girlfriend, they’d probably fix me food and make me dessert.
05. According to the song White Rabbit, “one pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small”. If you were offered these pills today, which pill would you take and why?
Larger. Why not? Bigger is better isn’t it?

When I Was A Kid… – Chick Chat

1. Fav. Book as a Child?: I loved the Alvin Fernald books (A’s Secret Code, Mayor for a Day, etc.), always doing fun stuff and getting into trouble (and yet still helping out).
2. Fav. TV Show as a Child?: I loved the Wonderful World of Disney, Sundays at 7, I think… A different show/movie every week.
3. Fav. Movie as a Child?: The “Escape from With Mountain” movies, I loved Tia and Tony. FYI: Tia played Alvin’s sister on the Wonderful World of Disney movies (I didn’t realize how all 3 questions tied together until this second).
4. Fav. Food as a Child?: PB & J. Lunch and Dinner! I still remember mom getting excited the first time I at a hamburger.
5. Fav. Outfit as a Child?: Jeans and a T-shirt. I think it was always a white t-shirt.

Impact! – Wednesday Matinee

1. What is the coolest movie gadget / prop you’d like to have in real life?
The prop works!?! Just like in the movie?!? All sorts of sci-fi gizmos, gadgetry and starships flash before my eyes. Let’s be more practical… Maybe a Stepford Wife? The DeLorean from Back to the Future? A magic lamp with three wishes? Oh! I know! The gizmo Arnold and Danny used to make Arnold have a baby in Junior. Or I guess I could just use the lamp…
2. What movie has your favorite / most passionate kiss scene?
All I can keep thinking of is the scene from that thing you do When Faye (Liv Tyler) says, somekind

I have wasted thousands and thousands of kisses on you–kisses that I thought were special because of your lips and your smile and all your color and life. I used to think that was the real you, when you smiled. But now I know you don’t mean any of it. You just save it for all your songs. Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight.

But that’s really kind of a non-kissing scene. Maybe when Craig Stoltz finally kisses the Mary Stuart Masterson character (Watts) in Some Kind of Wonderful. (I need to think a little more on this one.) The first time Max kisses Liz on Roswell (but that’s not a movie…)

3. What movie had the most impact on how you view life and why?
flightnavI’ll give two answers.

  1. Flight of the Navigator (the best Disney movie ever, which finally just came out on DVD last week): Because it always makes me feel like a little kid. Every time I’ve seen it. and that’s worth something.
  2. Sabrina (the remake): I’ve always wanted to go to Paris after I saw that movie I kept thinking about it and a day (or two) later I realized “hey! I can go to Paris”, so I signed up for a French class and realized if I really wanted to do it I could, it really changed my perspective on things.

FYI, I never made it to Paris, got fed up learning the language, went to Prague instead. I’ve been to Costa Rica twice and England since, but still no Paris…

Raising Helen Review

raisinghelenI really enjoyed Raising Helen. Kate Hudson plays the spacy, cute, successful who’s everyone’s favorite aunt quite well. The women I went with (Kelly & Dawn) thought it was a little cheesy, but I disagree. And it was a good family movie, not sure what the rating was but if the kids are interested, take ’em. It was pretty much what you’ve expect from the previews, so if you didn’t like, don’t see, and if you did, go check it out!

Now here’s the weird part – there was a cartoon that appeared to be part of the movie about this cat with a possessed tail that was attacking him, it was very strange, possible not so kid appropriate (it was kinda creepy) but I’m pretty sure it had the Disney brand at the beginning of it. Very odd.

These are all the DVDs I own, many are music. I’m not a big movie collector but I’ve picked up a few here and there. Most of the movies were really good deals (many were under $10, if not $8) even with shipping but they still show my taste(?). I should have slightly editied since there were a few (Analyze This, The Mask) that I wouldn’t have bought but came free with a player. SO click on the icon to check them out.

FYI – ‘Flight of the Navigator’ is the best movie every (and it’s by Disney). ‘A Christmas Story’ is great too, I’m not sure why it isn’t in the list?!?

Disney’s Sacred Planet IMAX

sacredplanetI saw Disney’s Sacred Planet today at the IMAX. It was excellent. Beautiful scenery! It was a more natural version of ‘The Lorax’ lots of little clues about nature but not too much in your face with it. From Africa to Utah (and the Arctic?) and stories of culture passed on.
