Aaron Sorkin and Brad Pitt are doing MoneyBall?

I really liked Michael Lewis’s book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. It’s the story of how Billy Beane turned the Oakland A’s Baseball team around by picking players with statistics.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis

The story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget, by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.

Plot synopsis at IMDB.com

It’s a great read if you like baseball or numbers, I’m not a big sports fan, but I’d recommend the book if you’re interested in either. But the numbers part was really interested. I originally read it because my dentist talked me into reading it.

So it turns out that they’ve decided to turn it into a movie. They’ve got Aaron Sorkin (West Wing) to rewrite it into a movie and they’ve got Brad Pitt to play the team’s general manager. And it looks like they’ve got some of the baseball players to play themselves.

Oops, not to get you all interested in it, but it doesn’t come out until 2011. So read the book in the mean time and you’ll enjoy it again in another two years when the movie comes out…

And looking up Michael Lewis at Amazon.com I see that he also wrote Next: The Future Just Happened, I’m pretty sure I’ve got that on my shelf (unread), now I know why I got that book!

Fall Shows NOT to Miss (Fall 2006)

Heroes – Normal people start to gain extra abilities all over the world.
The 4400 meets the X-Files (maybe?). If you’ve ever read a super-hero comic or wanted to be different then this show is for you. We’ve got a lot of Lost-like coincidental meeting in this one. A great concept. We’ll see how it lasts. (What the heck is the girl in the mirror’s power?)
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – The director flips out on the air. They need new people in charge.
Sports Night meets Saturday Night Live (with a little bit of Network thrown in). A great cast in this one, a lot of your favorites from Aaron Sorkin shows.
Jerico – A little town in the southwest named Jerico. A mushroom cloud in the distance.
The Day After meets Invasion. This one might get a little old. But the first episode was great. Be sure to listen to the answering machine; the first time and the last time gives the most chills. The post disaster stuff is already reminding me of the city in Invasion being cut off from civilization.
The Nine – A bank robbery. Nine strangers. It’s 52 two hours later.
They’ve bonded, they’ve lost one and they still aren’t sure what happened. A lot of familiar faces in this one. Lots of Lost-type flashbacks and they’re trying to piece it all together. Intense.
Secrets of a Small Town – A murder in a small town. A reporter returns home after 5 years. A lot of other stuff/secrets I’m still clueless about.
Twin Peaks meets (I’m not sure what yet). A cast of thousands. Lots of people with secrets. This one is definitely worth watching the first few ’cause if you miss them I don’t know if you can catch up later.
Traveler – Two friends get blamed for a museum bombing. Their friend Will Traveler is missing. A coincidence?
9/11 meets the One Armed Man. This might get old as they track down clues to clear their name. (There has got to be a GPS tracker in the watch).

My top 5, all time favorite movies?

What are your Top 5, all time favorite movies?

  • Flight of the Navigator: An unknown Disney movie. But one of the best.
  • The American President: Aaron Sorkin before Sport’s Night and before The West Wing.
  • The Cutting Edge: D.B. Sweeney as a hockey player who gets an injury. While it stops him from playing hockey, it doesn’t stop him from skating.
  • Ever After – A Cinderella Story: Drew Barrymore as a Cinderella-ish “character”
  • A Christmas Story: Be careful, or you’ll shoot your eye out!!!

    From Top 5 Friday

  • Mr. Willis of Ohio

I watched one of my absolute favorite episodes of The West Wing tonight. It’s an early episode, probably from earlier in the first season, the title is the same as that of this post. It’s my favorite episode for many reasons:

  • Mr. Willis, the eighth grade social studies teacher, who is there to vote for his wide that recently passed away.
  • The inane trivia from from the President.
  • Mallory and Zoey bulling the boys into taking them (and teasing them when they get there) to the bar in Georgetown.
  • All the census information.
  • Charlie defending Zoey at the bar when the boys start to harass her at the bar.
  • The explanation of the extra money in the budget.
  • The President’s speech to Zoey as he’s yelling at her.
