An excellent performer whom I’ve sure I’ve seen close to then times.

Alison Sudol was excellent last night. A very small venue at The Shelter, the cancert was sold out but I’d guess there were only about 300 people there, lots of room. No one was back farther than about the equivalent of about 10 rows (no seats, general admission standing only with just a few tables). I’ve seen A Fine Frenzy before and it was a smaller venue so it was great having the small crowd and as a bonus it was a non-smoking show. A Fine Frenzy Alison Sudol March 2008 Detroit

She’s has such a lovely voice and writes her own songs. She’s got this voice that’s kind of a Sarah McLachlan / Tori Amos voice and she’s just incredible. She so beautiful and has this sunning red head, and while it might not be naturally that red, she’s got that anemic porcelain look that so many red heads do, I’m assuming she’s actually a redhead. My camera in my phone takes pretty crappy pictures, but I tried to take a few.

She’s so into when she plays, and every so often she looks at the audience, I feel likes she’s forgotten us and that her manager told her she has to make eye contact every so often and that’s why she looks up. I always think of ‘gracious’ when thinking about her personality, that’s just how I feel when she’s talking to us and that’s how I feel when she talks to you personally. I did get to get to say ‘hi” and get her autograph on a promo poster after the concert. She’s just so nice, even with just a 30-second conversation…

It was a busy night as we had a fund raiser at work at six and the concert doors opened at 6 too (they’re about 25 minutes apart). So we planned to skip the opening act and just see her and depending on the time possibly go back to the auction. When I finally called the concert hall. They said she was going on in 15 minutes!!!!! So I had to find Kelly and Mark get out of there. We made good time, even with having to go a longer route, found free parking right around the corner and when we walked in the music was playing but she hadn’t uttered a word yet!! So it was a great night.

One Cell in the Sea A Fine FrenzyWe never got back to the auction, even though it was only 9:30 when we left, it was just a little too late to head back. So I have no idea what or if I won anything. I probably had my name on about $400 worth of things, but I’m assuming I got over bid on more than a few of them (there was still 30 minutes left of bidding when we took off). I had some train tickets to Chicago, baskets of games, chocolate, theatre tickets, plus I bid on one of my donated items and a few more things. One of the items I donated was for my Cat in the Hat basket which had books/stuff and included a visit from me as the Cat in the Hat (for birthday parties, classroom visits and bachelorette parties), I drove the bidding up to $75 before I left, but if no one bought it I’ve purchased myself. While I love doing it, it’s not worth it to spend a hot summer day outside in the outfit if it’s only giving the school that much money so we’ll see how that went. I also donated a basket of coffee and chocolate covered coffee beans that I picked up the stuff the last time I was in Costa Rica; I’m wondering what that sold for, it’s was only at $17 the last time I looked…

SarahsilentnightOops, I forgot to mention this earlier this week. You can get Sarach McLachlan singing Silent Night for free from the iTunes music store. This track is off of her Wintersong Holiday album. These iTunes freebies are generally from Tuesday to Monday, so make sure you grab it this weekend.

So on October 17th Sarah McLachlan is releasing a Wintersong, a Christmas Album. Looking forward to this a lot! I always liked her “Song for a Winter’s Night” (which is on this) which is kind of a holiday song if I remember correctly.

It’s a new album but the downside of this begs the question “where is some new original music?!?”…

FYI – She’s also releasing Mirrorball: The Complete Concert newly re-mastered and on 2 CDs to be released on October 3rd. I really like her live, I’m generally pretty fussy about live recordings. But again, where’s the new music…

AimeemannitunesorigOkay, she didn’t actually disappoint me because I didn’t actually see her. It’s the fact that she rescheduled and I didn’t get to see her was the disappointing part. She was supposed to be in Ann Arbor tonight at the Michigan Theatre, I didn’t have tickets but there were seats available and I usually do pretty good picking some up at the last minute. I’m not sure when the show got bumped to the 20th (not one-hundred-percent sure I can make that one, but I’ll try). Since I really enjoyed the Liz Phair iTunes Originals album I picked up the other day I thought I’d pull out my Aimee Mann iTunes Originals album I had never really appreciated them before Liz’s so I’ll have to check out the few others I’ve purchased (and didn’t purchase).

I first saw Aimee Mann in concert (and started listening to here) at the Lilith Fair test tour, this was the tour when Sarah McLachlan took some other female artists out with her to show the concert promoters that people would come. I think it was Aimee, Sarah, Lisa Loeb, Patti Smith and Paula Cole. It was a nice concert in that it wasn’t a madhouse with all these bands playing on all these difference stages, but (if I recall correctly) it seems the performances were cut a little short due to having five headliners….

On other disappointments today:

  • Since I didn’t go to AA, I thought I might check out the festivities downtown for the SuperBowl but the weather is so crappy out I don’t even want to be wandering around downtown.
  • So I since that didn’t happen I figured that I always enjoy Battlestar Galactica so let’s watch that, but I really thought this week’s was a little slow :(

The thing about Galactica is I never rush to see it but it’s always SO good I never understand why I waited to watch it…

Actually I had a pretty good day today, I’m not moping, I’m just whining because I was just listening to her and thinking about it so I started typing…

Top five songs with food or drink in the titles

  • Ice Cream – Sarah McLachlan
  • Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffett
  • I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener – Jingle
  • 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall – Everyone
  • My Bologna has a first name – Jingle.

I thought of 1, 2 and 4 right away. I’m sure if I dug through my CDs I’d find some others. But then I thought of number 3 and it led to number 5. I was looking for one of the coke songs I really liked but there’s like 5,000 of them…
    From Top 5 on Friday.

MclachlanitumesorigiconSo I just got my weekly e-mail from the iTunes Music Store and see that there is a iTunes Originals Sarah McLachlan CD out! (I guess it’s not really a CD but in a few minutes, it will be for me. It’ll actually be two.) As usual there are 30 second previews of all the songs but none of these links will work for you if you don’t have iTunes (Windows or Mac).

An iTunes Original is generally a bunch of tracks consisting of the artist(s) speaking between the songs giving some background, some (possibly unique) live versions and a few more versions unique to the album. You’ll probably want to make two versions, one with just the music and one including the “directors commentary”…
There is also a Wallflowers one out this week And I just realized there is an Aimee Mann one from April that I bought a day or two before the demise of the laptop hard-drive a month ago, I’m 99% sure I backed it up before the demise of my laptop but I’m 100% sure I never listened to it, I’ll have to hunt that down too…

So I’ll burn some CDs for the car while I burn breakfast and it’s off to run around today (up to 70 degrees out!) and hopefully have the roof down…

So the iTunes free song of the week is Anna Nalick‘s “Breathe (2AM)”, this is a great song. Pretty earthy but a few of her other samples seem like there might have more of a beat. It’s only free until Monday the 29th(?).

Check out Single of the Weekher site for more info and more clips…)

I had actually bought it already… It was recently in a movie or on a WB/UPN show and I really enjoyed it. Free is good!

After this week click here – Anna Nalick

112304_SarahMcLachlanPS – They just released Sarah Mclachlan’s Afterglow Live (I’m assuming an exclusive to iTunes) with 15 live tracks for $9.99…

    1. Who or what is on your computer’s wallpaper?
Nothing (boring). It’s usually just distracting for me. I’ll set it after/during a vacation. The last was London.
    2. Go through your DVD/pre-bought video collection. Which three actors or actresses feature the most in them?
Without looking, I’d say Drew Barrymore (Boys on the Side/Ever After). Now that I look I’d have to add Keanu Reeves (3 Matrix) and Liv Tyler (Armageddon/Stealing Beauty). My collection is pretty diverse. Unless it’s music I usually don’t buy DVDs, unless it’s a really good deal.
    3. Go through your book shelves. Which three authors have written the majority of the books?
Diane Duane and Neil Gaiman and Mauve Binchey
    4. And what about CDs?
Tori, Indigo Girls and Sarah McLachlan (they probably are who I have the most DVDs of too).
    5. Open up the picture folder(s) on your hard drive. Of which actor/actress/movie/tv series/musician do you have the most pictures?
Hmm… Don’t really have a “picture” folder like that. Got a lot of stuff on the desktop I was using for posts: Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell), David Pogue (geek), Joan of Arcadia, Wimbledon…

I sent out my Burn It CDs late (but it was more than a few days ago, so if you didn’t get yours it’ll be there any minute) the theme was songs from movies. I was in two BurnIt groups (so I had six people sending CDs to me (actually I only had packages from five of them) and I had to send to the six of them and the coordinator.

I was nervous at first Alfie sent hers’ out way early and the packaging was beautiful. Great cover, printed CD, artwork for the back and inside (behind the CD). Even her printing on the envelope was great. Very professional and I don’t think it’s related to her major. She set the bar very high, the rest had some nice ones and some plain ones so I was feeling better for mine. Mine might have been in 2nd place for looks but I was still left in her dust.

I do have one complaint about iTunes, until you burn you don’t know how long your disc is, I mean who measures time by saying 1.1 hours?!?

Some were songs I liked, some were artists and some were movies I liked that I wanted a song from. It was hard since some of the movies just have a great sound track (Some Kind of Wonderful, The Lost Boys, Pretty in Pink, Boys on the Side, Bill and Ted’s, City of Angels, etc.) Here’s the track listing if you’re curious.

1 Oh Yeah Yello Ferris Buehler’s Day Off
2 Extraordinary Liz Phair Raising Helen
3 Kids in America Kim Wilde Clueless
4 Uninvited Alanis Morissette City Of Angels
5 Turn To The Sky March Violets Some Kind Of Wonderful
6 Do Wot You Do INXS Pretty In Pink
7 Do Anything Pete Shelley Some Kind Of Wonderful
    8 I Can’t Break Away Big Pig Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
9 Shell-Shock New Order Pretty In Pink
10 Iris Goo Goo Dolls City Of Angels
11 Good Times INXS & Jimmy Barnes The Lost Boys
12 I Still Believe Tim Cappello The Lost Boys
13 Summer Kisses, Winter Tears Julee Cruise Until The End Of The World
14 Turn To The Sky March Violets Some Kind Of Wonderful
15 Losing My Religion Tori Amos Higher Learning
    16 Why Can’t I? Liz Phair 13 Going on 30

1] You’re making a CD mix titled, “The Soundtrack of My Life.” Which songs would you include, and why?
Specific songs? I don’t know all of the titles but I know I’d start with one or two from each of the following. Tori Amos (something from the early years), Indigo Girls (early), Sarah Mclachlan (two or three from Sufacing?), Carly Simon (the cover she did of the theme from Casablanca), Jewel (the first two albums), Alanis (the one of the City of Angels soundtrack), Big Bird doing the ABC song. I might look up specifics later, but it’s been a long week…
2] What is your favorite song right now?
Probably one of the new Liz Phair songs, she’s been getting a lot of play by me lately. Maybe “My Favorite Underwear” that one always makes me smile.
3] You’re feeling down, sad, lonely, frustrated, angry … which song[s] do you play to help yourself feel better?
Usually some older stuff. Either an 80’s retro mix (the more dance type stuff, but always including Tainted Love) or a GoGo’s deluxe mix (GoGo’s, Jane Weidlan, Belinda, The Graces all shuffled up).
4] Do you watch the TV show “American Idol”? Why/why not? Who do you think will win the competition?
Not at all. It just doesn’t pose any interest to me.
5] Do most of your friends generally share your taste in music?
A lot of my female college friends like the earthier stuff, the guy friends liked the retro 80’s stuff. Current friends all like a little bit of one part and someone likes part of another.

I keep thinking am I picking songs from various eras to be the sound track or do I actually want to words to convey my life? I’m sure I’m over thinking this… But I’ve got a little bit of both…

These are all the DVDs I own, many are music. I’m not a big movie collector but I’ve picked up a few here and there. Most of the movies were really good deals (many were under $10, if not $8) even with shipping but they still show my taste(?). I should have slightly editied since there were a few (Analyze This, The Mask) that I wouldn’t have bought but came free with a player. SO click on the icon to check them out.

FYI – ‘Flight of the Navigator’ is the best movie every (and it’s by Disney). ‘A Christmas Story’ is great too, I’m not sure why it isn’t in the list?!?

They said they’d never release Roswell on DVD. They said that it would cost to much for all the music rights. But it just came out on DVD. But they said they couldn’t because… Oh. I got it… They changed the music…

I’m better now. Let’s get back on topic.

I’ve seen the first episode again (and again). It’s proably my most watched show ever (except maybe Sports Night but that’s another story). It’s a great show: aliens, kids tricking the authorities, a festival, Sarah McLachlan, Area 51, Jonathan Frakes and more great music. What could be better than that?

It starts off with Liz writing in her journal and a flashback to the Crashdown Cafe . Two customers in the cafe get in an argument and Liz accidentally gets shot and then Max heals her. It’s a great scene, great visuals, great music (did I mention Sarah?), just plain great. The sheriff’s dad used to believe in aliens and now he’s starting to believe. Did I mention that Liz is dating the sheriff’s son? It just gets better from there. :)

Did I tell you it’s a really good episode? If they changed any of the music, I didn’t notice anything. But I think the band was the same one who did some of the background music for the original episodes (but I could be wrong on that). It had a (minor) deleted scene, but I think it’ll be fun to seen them all again. They’re mildly widescreened (letterboxed), I don’t think they originally were. Well, I’m happy that’s it’s out and just needed to say so.
