Introducing "Asbestos Strike"

I found this little project over at Hilly's (SnackiePoo).

Let's make a band:
Asbestosstrike1. The first article title HERE is the name of your band.
2. The last four words of the very last quote HERE Is the title of your album.
3. The third picture HERE, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4. Now take the pic, add the band name and title to it, then post it.
5. Be sure to leave a comment so that I can check out your album...

The title, "Asbestos Strike", was not the first article I got, the first one was an actual music label but I decided not to use it in case that might upset them. The title of my album, "they had courage enough", was from a quote by Thomas Fuller. And my photo came from here, I did square it up a little to make it fit.

I Barely Passed The Internet Quiz...

Wow, it was pretty hard. Some geeky stuff in there (and that's not even the parts I got wrong).

JustSayHi - Dating

I did miss a few obvious ones (I over thought a few). I found it at Amy's.

26 Things Photographic Scavenger Hunt for May 2007

So there is a new 26 Things Photographic Scavenger Hunt for May 2007, they only do this every few months so I'm glad to catch it in advance.

It's a photo meme-like thing where they list 26 things and you need to take/post photos related to the topics. It's way open to interpretation and I like the idea of it so take a look and take some photos...

White Faced Monkey - Thursday Photo Challenge

Costa Rica Monkey 2007Another photo-meme. Today the Thursday Photo Challenge is Wildlife so I'm using this White-Faced Monkey photo from Montezuma, Costa Rica.

If you look very close (just below/by the neck) you can see there is a (very tiny) baby on the back of the monkey!

Speaking of Costa Rica, here's a information page from Time for Kids about Costa Rica...

Flowers - LensDay

2006-04-20 15-10-44.Img 0735So today's LensDay dealt with flowers so this week so I submitted this photo that I took in Egypt. I thought most of the flowers from there seemedso bright and beautiful. The other people on the trip compared it to flowers in Hawaii but since I've never been there I attributed it to the Egyptian mystique...

I just thought they all seemed so bright and beautiful....

All Taxed Out - Question of the day.

You’ve just been given a $2000 tax refund (that’s like $5000 dollars for you all in Canada and about 1200 pounds for you in the UK and, I don’t know what for you Aussies) but you must use it to buy home decorations.

  • What will you buy at the home decor/furniture store? (from the Question of the Day, please answer the question on their site (or your site and link back), they want to know you're playing)

Certainly, a new living room couch and chair/loveseat. I've looked lately and seen nothing exciting...

And I could use some new curtains in the bedroom and kitchen (nothing fancy) the old ones need replacing from me laving the window open and then getting blown all about....

My 101 in 1001 list update

So I've definitely fallen behind in my 101 in 1001 list (23% of my tasks done and used 32% of my time.). I've got more than a few things lined up in the next few months.

  • I'm having the family Christmas at my house this year. This covers two items: 1) Having the Family Christmas and 2) Have the extended family over once a year.
  • If I go to Costa Rica this winter I cover several items: 1) Going back to Costa Rica, 2) A warm winter vacation, 3) Possibly deciding if I want to move there some day.
  • I could also succeed in doing one (or two) more Christmas related items: 1) Greenfield Village or 2) The Hines Drive lights tour.

So I could start to catch up soon. It's likely I'll get five items just from the above list (maybe 7). I'll likely get more done, but these are very likely to happen by January...

Can you tell I'm feeling a little behind on the list. I'm not sure why, the purpose is to give more time to do these things. And if you consider most people don't complete any of their New Year's resolutions I've already got 23% of my list done...

    Taxi! (Question of the Day)

If you could, would you be a taxi driver for a day? In what city?
Las Vegas seems like it'd be an interesting choice. Mostly short fares. People partying, gambling, at a conference or vacationing. Mostly having fun of some kind. That's probably be a good choice.

    Six months to live.

Kyra asked these questions on her blog. She actually asked them two different ways: If you had six months and what if everyone had 6 months.

If you knew you only had six months to live, and the world was guaranteed to end for you - how would you live?

    What would you do?
Take it easy, relax, travel and lots more.

Would you spend your money, or save it?
Spend it. I'd clear out my 403b, 401k and IRAs! Heck, I'd stop probably stop paying my bills.

Would you eat healthy/diet, or would you be into the ice cream and chips every day?
Not healthy (not any less healthy than now either). Maybe more desserts :)

    Exercise?
Exer-what? Actually, I'd be running around so much I probably wouldn't need any.

Would you stay in your current job, or find something else to do?
Six months? I'd quit! (I like my job but at that point what's the point).

Would you keep your current friends, or cut the ones who only waste your time?
    I'd keep them all.

Would you talk to every single person that you consciously make time for? Or cut your loses?
    Status quo.

Would you stay where you live, or move?
I'd stay there but also travel.

What things would you stop caring about, that you do now?
Bills, upgrading the house (painting, furniture, etc.), stop saving for car, retirement, etc.

    Anything else?
I'd throw more than a few parties and give away a lot of my stuff, I don't need lots of it and and why make someone else decide who gets what later. I'd have to rush and finish lots of my 101 in 1001 list, just the fun ones, not the chores, those are the ones I really want to do anyways so why not... Since I'm dying in 6 months it probably wouldn't do any good to tell some people about my secret feelings for them but you never know. It might get me more kisses or (goodbye) sex...

I'm single and have no dependents so that really makes the options easier for me than some people. Sure I'd hook Mom up with some of my savings but she's probably fine without it so that makes this a lot more fun list for me than it might be for some others.

I'm not going to go the route if it was six months for everyone, I'd have to assume it'd be a bad place to be (chaos and all). But the new series 3 Moons Over Milford (free at iTunes at this point in time) is kind of a end of the world scenario (the moon breaks into three pieces in a degrading orbit) where it's not chaos, I'd like to think it'd go that way.

    Driving Habits - 3x Thursday

    1. Do you think you're a good driver? Do you drive defensively or offensively? Why?
I'm a pretty good driver. I kinda just get into “driving mode” and move along. (My mom always gets nervous).

    2. How fast do you normally drive? Do you always go the speed limit, or do you like to speed? Do you believe in the 'flow of traffic' method for speeding?
I probably go a little over, nothing significant.

    3. What do you think of those people who drive while talking on the fone? Do you think it impairs their driving? Why/why not? Do you do it?
They're generally idiots with a phone in one hand and a soda or smoke in the other. Get a headset!!!! It's the holding onto their head that's part of the impairment/problem. You see someone swerving weird or blocking an intersection or not turning and 90% of the time they're holding a phone (generally they aren't on a headset). If you don't believe me just walk around the grocery store; the ones pushing a cart and holding the phone are a menace, the ones with a headset just seem schizophrenic since thy're taking to themselves...

Bonus Question for Comments: What's one thing that just drives you absolutely bonkers that people do when their driving (or how their driving)?
Not using their blinker!!!! It should be a $500 fine IMHO.

Cooked to Medium Rare - Thursday Threesome

Onesome: Cooked to?-- Okay, the easy one: if you're having grilled meat (steak/hamburger) this weekend, how would you like it cooked?
Well done. I don't need it like a puck but I don't want any red. I don't want any indication this was on a living creature at some time previous to my eating it....

Twosome: Medium-- to large? ...too large? What do you think of the big ol' plasma screen HDTVs available now? I mean, would you if you could?
Awesome, but if you've got a room you can dim you can probably put in a projector for lots LE$$. Mine is 105 inches diagonally!

Threesome: Rare-- Footage: one of the major news services recently announced they would make archived news coverage available for personal purchase on DVD. Is there any one piece/segment/area of old news (or new) you'd like to have on your bookshelf to view “whenever”?
Yes, I'd like all the times I've made it on TV for one reason or another on one DVD (and others in my family too). But real news? Not really.

    The Ride - Meme

    What is your dream car?
Oh, I was going to say a hybrid convertible (we'll stick with that as my practical option).

But since someone else expanded answers to include other options like a driver or self driving (which would be great) I'm going to say I'd like the “traditional” flying car.

    North South Meme

What is the furthest North and the furthest South you've ever been?
North would have to be somewhere along the coast of Alaska. South would have to be Egypt or Costa Rica (I'm going to guess Egypt since it's a lot hotter there). Coincidentally, they are the first and last places I've traveled on my own.

    Way out there - 3x Thursday: 07/06/y2k+6

    1. What do you think of space? Do you think we should explore it, or stay here on Earth and tend to matters here?
Definetly explore it. No question about it. (Because it's there!)

    2. If you could travel anywhere off Earth, where would you go? Why?
Assuming I'm on a tour of sorts I would assume Saturn would offer a bit of choices for this solar system. If I have no restrictions it'd probably be to see a black hole (up close of course).

    3. Do you think we're doing enough to facilitate science? Why/why not? What would you do to change things?
Not a chance. We need more budget for NASA and for the private developers.

Bonus Question for Comments: What are some of your favorite movies about space/take place in space/etc?
All the ones that come to mind are kids movies: Explorers, The Last Star Fighter, Flight of the Navigator (of course). I'm sure there are more but not coming to mind right now.

So I finally did a 26 things project...

So I finally did a 26 things scavenger hunt. I just noticed they were offering one for this month (they only do it every few months) and I thought I had a lot of Egypt photos that fit the plan so I used those (a few I had to stretch the definitions a little).

Here's the photos of the 26 things that I used...

FYI - this also completes one of my 101 in 1001 items list!!!

    Most useless thing

What is the most useless thing you have in your wallet?
I don't actually carry a wallet, it takes up more room than the items, which makes the wallet the useless part. But to stick with the theme of the question, today I did wonder why I had a receipt from Arby's in my pocket from three days ago...

So I saw this at Amy's and thought it'd be interesting to do. I scored pretty much in the area I thought I'd hit. I think the only reason I hit so high in the Journalism and English areas is because blogging influenced some of my answers to the writing and expressing questions. I'm surprised that biology didn't show up higher but who knows how they figure the out. There was no computer or education areas in my results (or any that I've seen) so I'm assuming it's not an option.

    I hate shoe shopping...

SuttonbrownI'm definitely lacking nice brown shoes and I own several pairs of these shoes (see image) in black but needed to order the ones in the color brown. I knew I'd like them (this has been my standard black shoe for years) and I've been meaning to do this for ages so I added it to my 101 in 1001 list. So the guy at the Hush Puppies store said he could order them for me cheaper than I could buy on-line (which was true). I just wasn't sure exactly what my size was so I wanted to check my black ones at home.

So I found the size and called them back and when they got on-line to order them it turns out they didn't have the brown ones any more. So I checked all the on-line stores and the few places that did have them didn't have my size (and they were all more expensive than he could have got them for me)...

Then I found Boscov's!!!! They have the Sutton Hush Puppies in Brown and they were half off. So I ordered two pair! And I loved them. (Of course I did, they're the same as the black ones!)

Did I tell you I hate shoe shopping? And that they don't make these any more? And they were brown? And they were exactly what I wanted? Guess what? I ordered 4 more! I won't have to deal again with this for a long time...

Is Boscov's a real store? Has anyone shopped at one? Was it a catalog place before they were on-line?

(FYI: This is one of my 101 in 1001 days items, and this post is pretty much the same post as I put over there...)

    101 Things in 1001 days

    So far I've completed:
  • 03/15/06: Frame all of my college degrees.
  • 03/11/06: Get a new desk for the landing.
  • 03/11/06: Do my taxes for last year.
  • 03/08/06: Post this list on-line.
  • 03/06/06: Figure out a plan for my mortgage.
  • 03/03/06: Get a new carbon monoxide detector.
  • 02/17/06: Do my taxes for the year before last.
  • 01/15/06: Get a new desk chair.
  • 12/08/05: See Anna Nalick in concert.
  • Way back in September 2005 I said I liked the idea of this 101 things in 1001 days.

As it says on the 101 in 1001 site:

The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
So I've built a list and I'm crossing them off. I broke them down by categories: Blog, Entertainment, Family, Health, Home, Me, Money, Other, Technology and Vacation (the last category may be overloaded). Of course the list is at http://101in1001.garylapointe.com/ and I've got it all geeked out (but the template needs work).

On the site there is a countdown as to the time left and how many tasks I've completed (and what percentage of tasks I've completed vs. percentage of time passed).

Recently completed items are in the left sidebar of this site on many of the pages. Also on days that I post a new entry there and here, it'll automatically show up under the date. Unfortunately, it was an afterthought so it doesn't show up on days when I don't post here, but I'll figure something out...

There are RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds if you're a feed reader...

These are things I'm doing so some of the posts will be relevant to life so I'm trying to figure out a way to incorporate them more here.

    Pride

    1. Do you have a problem admitting you’re wrong?
Sometimes. But I usually keep my mouth shut if I'm not sure so I usually avoid it. (So I guess that's a yes).

    2. Would you rather watch someone important to you walk out of your life or beg them to stay?
I'd beg. That's better than regretting it. And if they're leaving what's to lose?

    3. Are you the kind of person who would rather try your best and fail, or not try for fear of failure?
No fear of failure in most things. I'll generally try!

    4. Have you ever expressed interest in someone high above your status, where your chances of being rejected were very high?
I can't think of anything but I'm sure I have. I'm not a stranger to rejection.

    5. If you made a contribution to a charity would you want credit, or would giving be enough?
Giving is enough but if I can get credit too...

    How you sleep...

Question of the Week - 2006/02/20. More about how you sleep!

Are you a “sheet next to the skin” person or a “blanket next to the skin” person?
    Sheets.

Do you like a heavy comforter, or just a light blanket?
Heavy comforter (I like it cold).

    Ceiling fan or no fan?
I'd like a ceiling fan but I don't have one. I usually run some kind of fan for the noise.

    Windows open?
No. Sometimes on vacation when it's someplace nice...

    Nightlight or complete darkness?
    Complete darkness, like a cave.

How many hours a night do you sleep (or would you sleep, if given the chance)?
I'd like about seven-and-a-half, it's rare that I get it.

    From QOTW.

Could You Pass 8th Grade Science?

So I usually don't take these, let alone post them but I saw this and had to take it.

It's science and was a general standardized “test” so I felt the need to score myself. There were a few I wasn't sure but I took my best guess and did okay...

I generally don't even do these goofy quizzes that define your type. I usually just stick with the more thoughtful memes (which I haven't done much lately).

    You Passed
    8th Grade Science

    Congratulations, you got 8/8 correct!

    Four For Friday

Q1 - Co-Workers: Do the people you work with tend to be younger than you, the same age as you, or older than you? How do the differences in age or generations play themselves out in your work environment? In other words, are these sorts of differences good, bad, or not a factor in the work you do?
Most of the people in my building are older than myself but district wide with all the teachers a lot of the staff is younger than me. Though in most of my previous jobs I used to be the baby where ever I worked.

Q2 - Television: Last week, Kevin Martin, the relatively new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, said he was in favor of an “a la carte” cable pricing plan that would allow consumers to choose to pay only for the individual cable channels they want. Do you like the idea of a la carte pricing for cable TV? If Martin is successful in getting the cable industry to offer it, how many channels do you think you'd choose to subscribe to a la carte?
Yes!! Please yes! I'd do about nine channels: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, UPN, WB, USA, SciFi and G4. There might be a few more but I'd have to check the TiVo to see what else. I do like a few of the HD channels out there (inHD, inHD2 and I think there are a few more from other networks I don't get) so I might check into those depending on the price.

Q3 - Eating Out: After receiving the bill for a great meal in a restaurant you'd been dying to try, you notice that your waiter neglected to charge for one of the items you ordered and happily devoured. Would you... tell the waiter, not tell the waiter but leave a larger tip than called for, or not do anything? Would your answer be different if the meal or service really sucked?
I don't think I've ever not been charged for en entree or anything big, generally a soda or a drink. Which would get the waiter a bigger tip. It'd depend on the service.

Q4 - Business Cards: Do you have one? If so, how often do you hand yours out verses receiving them from others?
I have business cards (but I need more). I hand them out occasionally, more people generally give them to me than the other way around.

    Saturday Six

    1. Which of the following generally costs you more: a normal trip to your barber/hairstylist, your usual lunch at your favorite restaurant, the most recent amount you paid to fill up your gas tank, or your biggest single contribution to a single charity in 2005?
My biggest contribution to a single charity was the largest: which would to First Step (the shelter I volunteer at). Next would be Gas, Hair, Lunch.

    2. What drink -- alcoholic or not -- do you drink entirely too much of?
Coca-Cola. My other drinks are water, Cap't + Coke, Long Island Iced Teas, and a fruity drink that tastes like Hawaiian Punch.

    3. Did you receive a Christmas card from anyone you didn't send one to? Did you send them a belated card in return?
Yes. I got lots of nice ones this year (I sent none).

    4. Take this quiz (if you haven't already!): What is most important in your life?
Family. (See the details of the quiz below).

    5. Before taking the quiz, which of its categories (career, love, money, health, family or fun) would you have said would be your answer?
    Family and Fun.

    6. Do you believe in soulmates? Do you think that there are at least one out there for every person, that there is a single “true” soulmate for every person, or that there aren't soulmates for everyone?
I hope there is at least one, 'cause I think I've let a few get by already.

    From the Saturday Six.

Family is most important in your life.

Having a high focus on family indicates that you are a loving and nurturing person. You want to have a nice big family of your own, and you are very close with your siblings and parents.

I'm not sure how it divided out the Fun and the Love to decide on just family...

    About blogging and memes

What first got you started blogging?
Heather was doing it so I had thought about it a little bit. Then I started watching Joan of Arcadia and used it as my motivation to start blogging.

How often do you post to your blog?
    I think I average about 10 posts a week.

Do you have more than one blog and if so, how are they each different?
I'm working on some more (more techy ones) but just need to do the last little bit. So it's really just the main one.

Where did you first hear about memes?
I probably saw them on someone else site, I'm not really sure.

Do you remember the first meme you participated in and if so, what was it?
Either the Scrabble one (I think I first saw it on Heather's) or The (original) Friday Five (now deceased).

Do you run any memes yourself and if so w
