Speaking of the moon…

I was looking for a (regular) calendar and I found this.

The Moooonnn…

So I really like the way the background it working out! The moon changing with the phases is pretty nifty. It wasn’t moving very fast at first, as a matter of fact it didn’t match some other moon icons so I think something choked at the US Naval Observatory where I get it from, it seems like it’s sped up the last 24 hours. It wasn’t previously matching some other moon viewers.

Friends and more… – RE: Blogs

1. Have you made lasting friendships via your blog that grew into a ‘real life’ friendship?
No, but I’m feeling like I’m getting to know some of the other people better. Which is kinda silly, I know details, but I don’t really know them. I hope someone organizes a Michigan Blogger Happy Hour (Detroit) or something to meet some of these people.
2. How many of your offline conversations with friends, family, co-workers contain the words, “I blogged about that the other day….”?
Generally never. I don’t usually mention it unless someone asks. I talk about the web and bloggers but I don’t generally mention it’s me. Anyone who finds it (or whatever) is fine, but I don’t advertise… Not sure exactly why. Probably ’cause I don’t think they’ll “get it” and by the time they ask they’ll understand better?
3. Regarding blog templates – have you made any cool updates to your digs?
Just yesterday. I did a lunar theme and it should change automatically as the moon phase does.
4. Have any blogs given you inspiration this week – – good, bad or ugly?
All the complaining about Movable Type just made me think about UseNet/NetNews and the whining that always went on there. Asking a few questions, reading all the information really would have gone a long way. It was more a dis-inspiration. All the blogging about the torturing and beheding has pretty much had some bad karma too. I’ve actually had a good week reading, it’s just been tainted by some of the stuff. Actually Katie has been pretty geeked about her new apartment which has been a nice read and has put a smile on since she’s SO happy about it…

New Lunar Background

moonSo I’ve gone grey. I mean my blog has gone grey. I’ve gone with some dark colors. The moon in the background (it’s almost not there today) is from the US Naval Observatory and should change as the phases change. We’ll see how well that actually works in the next week or so. Here is some more information on moon phases.

At the same time I cleaned this template up a little. Comments/templates should look better and the site should be a little more consistent. I thought I had done some of that already but maybe I overwrote it… Please let me know if you have any viewing problems (especially if the greys are too close together to read). It looks like there is still an issue with the search results page, it’s readable, just not 100% consistent.

100 Things

Here’s my 100 things about me page. (If you’re looking for my 101 in 1001 days list go here.) To follow the theme that I’ve found on many other sites, partially to see what I come up with and to let others see what I come up with. I’ve broken this down a bit: I like, I dislike, I am, I’ve live in, I wish I understood more about, places I’ve been and before I die…

It’s interesting how many of these things I’ve blogged about so far…

UPDATE: December 2004/June 2005. I just came here to update this. I can’t believe how much it has not changed. The only other things are I’ve been liking my iPod (and listening to podcasting), the Scene It? DVD games and maybe some additional music groups (Katy Rose and maybe a few others) and I won’t add them until they’ve been around a bit longer. Probably “Two and a Half Men” (I laugh SO hard) and Liz Phair (added).

Quote of the Day, Every Day!

I now have a new item in my Today section on my links column. So with the Sun, the Moon, “my” weather, word of the day there is now the Quote of the Day. As with everything else it gets updated automatically, so if it doesn’t change, it’s not my fault…

You can click the links to go to the main page of the site or click on the author to see other quotes by the Author. Today’s quote was
“Time cools, time clarifies; no mood can be maintained quite unaltered through the course of hours.” – Mark Twain

PS – I’m always looking for more additions to my “today” section.

“Today” additions to my blog…

So I’ve been working on my blog here and there. The display format is going to change soon but I’m not there yet.

The fun part is that I’m working on a “today” part of my sidebar. Be sure to scroll down and check it out. It’s got the word of the day, the phase of the moon, the sky, what Dearborn, Michigan, USA, Earth looks like at this moment (it shows the sunlight, but since it’s zoomed in the US it’s hard to tell how it works exactly, keep an eye on it around sunrise/set) and the temperature/time. All the graphics are clickable for more detailed looks/infomation. I’m looking for more of these little gizmos so please send me any if you have some ideas (or post in the comments). Looking for a today in history or Detroit/Michigan news one in particular.

With additions of these graphics and being more conscientious of adding graphics to my entries I’ve got quite a few images on the page. This breaks one of my cardinal rules only 4 (or 6) graphics per page (especially start pages). As connections get faster this is less of a problem and I’m really good at defining the size of my images, which helps pages load better/faster. Now if I did entries more often, I’d have less graphics, but when I don’t do them as often I feel like I have to make them better. So I’ve been using a not often used tag called “lowsrc” what this does is load a lower resolution image first so the page gets formatted faster. Here’s my question. Where the images load, before they appear does anyone see the word “loading” appear (in a blocky font) before the actual image? Please post in the comments and let me know if you do (don’t bother if you don’t). Thanks!
