Technically, it’s okay to watch:
All of Doctor Who straight through &
All of Torchwood straight through.

They stand on their own, the stories in both shows are independent enough that they don’t require viewing alternating. The same applies the Doctor Who cartoons and radio shows.

It’s only necessary to overlap the DW & TW episodes where characters have cross-overs. So far, this only occurs with Jack Harkness and Martha Jones.

This results in a different, yet simplified, viewing order.

DW s4-5 specials = The Next Doctor; Planet of the Dead; The Waters of Mars; The End of Time

DW s5-6 specials = A Christmas Carol; Space; Time

DW s6-7 specials = Death is the Only Answer; The Doctor, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The s3-4 type of labeling simplifies the placement of the specials, since they occur between seasons/series.

My personal favorite viewing orders are also the simplest:

TW s1-4, then s5+ if they ever actually air
DW s1-6, then s7+ as they air

It’s probably best to just watch all of Torchwood first since it might be finished for good, and then dig into Doctor Who since it is very likely going to still be airing even after the end of time. We can thank our friendly Time Lord for that.

This has been really great, but the Torchwood Radio plays, are they still available to stream or download anywhere? They weren’t available via the link you gave. It looks like BBC only leaves them up for 7 days after original broadcast, which I’m obviously well overdue for.

I would watch DW series 5 and the first half of series 6, Torchwood series 4, then the rest of series 6 as that is the order it has aired in.

Having just finished children of the earth I’m wondering about after Doctor who: the end of time? do i watch all of season 5 and six of Doctor who before Miracle day?

That person took it upon themselves to number things the way that they weren’t supposed to be numbered. They stuck a cartoon in as s04e15. Which is funny because when they numbered the other cartoon (infinite quest), they just put prequel and stuck it in the middle of the season.

Since 2005, none of The Doctor Who or Torchwood seasons had more than 13 episodes plus a Christmas episode (so 14 tops).
And most numbering schemes didn’t even number the Christmas episode (is it episode 14 of last season? or episode 0 of the next?).

I think most people would agree that the shows (with actors, not cartoons) are the canonical plot lines that everything else rolls around. Cartoons, books and audiobooks just aren’t the same authority. The Torchwood audio plays are a little different (I’d say they rank above cartoons) because the BBC actually aired them (and they’re plays, not just one voice reading).

And the weird 2009 season of David Tennant specials never even seemed to get numbered, they certainly didn’t go with the Donna season. They’ve just been referred to by name most places that I’ve seen them listed. And they don’t come with season 4 of Doctor Who DVDs (do they?).

Radio plays are optional in my opinion.

Also, I’ve heard that these 2011 radio plays also take place in/before season 3….

Where is S04E18 ?

So do you have to listen to the radio plays to get season 3 of torchwood?

Thanks for the list, I just had a pleasant viewing experience with Torchwood S1 and discovered Time Crash which I didn’t know about.

I also wasn’t that interested in the Christmas Specials until seeing this list.

Danny’s list is intricate and I didn’t follow it, but I did rewatch DWS03E11+ (Utopia) after TWS01E13 (End of Days)

The first Children in Need special is a nice little bit in real time that connects the S1 finale and Christmas special opening. It’s on the same DVD as the Special which makes it easy.

The only time Doctor Who and Torchwood intertwined while being aired was when Donna’s Christmas special aired between episodes 11 and 12 of Torchwood S1, but they don’t relate story-wise so there’s no need to watch them that way. Donna’s special is in the DW S3 box set so it should be easier to watch right before season 3 anyway.

All references between shows should make sense if you watch in this order, as it is the order in which they aired.

(The only reason I’m adding this to such an old post is because it’s still the best and easiest list to find on Google for people wondering in what order to watch the shows)

You also forgot to put the mini episode “Time Crash” in there. I have it labeled as episode 55-B because is only a few minutes long. It does however lead quite nicely from “Last of the Time Lords” into “Voyage of the Damned”

oh sorry i just have avi’s of all the episodes so that’s why it was relatively easy to piece the episodes together in a coherent order. the cartoons while being cartoons do bear relevance in the series (i figure) on account of 1 having martha jones and 1 where the doctor is solo. there are significant references in torchwood that prove the episode sequence is necessary in putting the 2 series’ together although they are minute. anyhow, i’m just playing around and not trying to be a doctor nazi or stickler :P but if you do watch the two series in the order i suggested, i think you’ll be most satisfied in its continuity.
