Sometimes I wonder if they’ve changed their manufacturing process.

I’ve had this bed through a few long time girlfriends and no one has ever complained about the mattress. I think most really liked it.

I’d ask if you are keeping the room cold enough, the mattress is supposed to be kept at less than 68 degrees, but your husband is sleeping okay. But maybe he can sleep anywhere...

Please come back let us know how it turns out for you!

I wish I would have done my research and found this forum prior to purchasing a Rhapsody Tempurpedic bed last week. My husband and I haven't had any luck with other mattresses (non-Tempurpedic) in the last 5 or 6 years, so we decided to splurge. I think we both just assumed that such a high-priced mattress would lead to a superior sleep experience. The mattress was delivered last Friday, so we have now slept in it for 6 nights. My husband has been doing just fine on it. Sleeping well and no complaints. I think he'd be happy keeping it.

For me, on the other hand, I can barely walk. I am experiencing so much back pain. I work from home and it's difficult sitting in my office chair.

I'm actually able to get to sleep okay on my back, and when I wake up in bed I usually feel all right. It's once I get up for the day that my body feels it. I'm usually a side-sleeper, and I can't get comfortable enough to fall asleep on my side. I am 5'10" and weight 135 pounds, so I'm proportional.

I've read through many of the comments in this thread, and I now understand better the concept of breaking in the mattress. I have been walking on it, I had my kids walk on it, I make sure the room is the right temperature...

I want to believe that it will improve, and that if I just give it a few more nights then I'll adjust. But I don't think I can sleep on there again; the back pain is constant, and I am losing productivity in my work.

I would love input on the following:

1) For those of you who experienced back pain initially and then it went away and you now like the mattress, do you remember how long it took for you to become comfortable and experience no more pain?

2) For those of you who returned/exchanged, what specific mattress did you find worked for you?

(We only have the option of a one-time exchange, no earlier than 30 days, so I want to zero in on some other options that I can do my due diligence on)

Thanks for any input.

My Husband and I purchased a Tempurpedic mattress in September of 2008. The odor was almost unbareable and seemed to last for months, but after that was finally gone, we we able to enjoy the mattress, and it felt great for a Couple of Years, but after that we both would wake up with horrible pain right in the lower part of our back. I always change positions all night, as does my Husband. We were very disapointed. Not only that we too use the waterproof cover that is vinyl like on the bottom and has a cotton fabric texture to it on the outside, and when we removed it there was an unexplained huge round stain on it. I just read the above comment, and now I am going to have to see if its mold. Im worried sick about that now. But If your reading this I highly recommend that you DO NOT PURCHASE this mattress because after a couple Years or less, you will be hurting. I wish we would have went with the Sleep Number bed. So I give this very expensive mattress a 1 from a scale of 1 - 5 with 5 being the BEST!! Yeah right!! Again, DO NOT PURCHASE!! Thanks for listening and I hope you will take the advise from those of us who have had this kind of mattress for a few years.

I fell for the hype. It was a total and complete waste of money.

I can't believe I spent almost $4000 on a king sized bed that sleeps worse than the floor. I got the mattress to help me stay asleep (not because of any pains on a regular mattress). Have had it 4 months now, and wake up to excruciating leg, hip and back pain. I'm 33 .. I am in excellent health, never had a significant health issue before, and I love traveling - because it lets me sleep without pain on a hotel mattress.

Please do your research. For those of you who this stuff works for .. awesome .. but I was taken in, and I find myself sleeping on an inflatable aerobed next to my tempurpedic each night now.

The only thing that helped me finally realize it was this expensive tortuture device, causing all that pain, is my regular business travel. Great ad campaign, you definitely fooled me.

We've had Tempurpedic mattress 3 years and it does sleep hot. Though they say do not put a mattress cover on, get one which has fleece on it. It separates you from the latex and provides a woven layer where air can circulate. Remember, sheep stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter with their covering.

We purchased our Cal King split adjustable bed from a local retailer. We were so excited. It had every option you could order. Adjustable, Massage, all the best! We had to order it and within about 10 days we had it set up in our home. The smell of the Off Gassing was intense. Unfortunately, it was fall/ early winter and we live at 4000 ft. We had to air out our master bedroom for 3 weeks before we could sleep in the room. I am an asthma suffer and even with the air cleaner running, it was too irritating to my lungs. We were not expecting this. With most new items, you expect some new fumes, but this is well beyond the norm. I find it hard to believe these fumes are "non-toxic". We slept on the bed for 2 weeks after the airing out period and I hated the bed. My back problems hurt worse. It was my low back issues that caused us to seek a new bed. We called the store and discussed our options. We were told to give it more time and if we were still not happy after a full 60 days, they were willing to give us a full refund. We slept on the bed another 40 days and finally liked the bed and decided to keep it. 2 years later, one side of the electronics failed and the bed was stuck in the up position. My husband was able to get the bed to go back down, and that is as far as we ever got. To this day, the bed is still non functional. We are just now trying to fix the electronics. This is how I found this blog and decided I would warn others to think twice before making an expensive mistake like we made. So in searching for parts for our problem... I am finding that it's not uncommon to have the "down boxes" these are the boxes with the computer board in them go out after just 2 years. As well as the remotes go out for no reason. Remotes are $100.00 each Not sure how much these down boxes are... still looking for that. The motors are only fully covered for 5 years. Nothing electronic is covered after this point and everything else is prorated out the 20 year remainder with the service call and parts shipping not being covered. So, not much is covered after 5 years! Anyway... The bigger part of our story is in year 7.
I have always kept the mattress covered. 2 times per year I take off the water proof cover and wash them. I wash sheets every week. When I went to remove the water proof cover, I could see something through the tempur pedic cover that is covering the mattress.
It was round circular blotches that were about 2 to 3 inches in diameter. To my horror it appeared to be mold spots. It was everywhere on my husbands side of the mattress. Being an allergic person I started to panic. We had been sleeping on a potentially toxic problem. One that may or may not be covered under our warranty. I scrambled to find the paperwork for the bed. Remember... it has been 7 years. It took me most of the day, but I found everything. As I read through the 20 year warranty, I could hardly believe my eyes when I read " MOLD IS NOT A COVERED EVENT UNDER THIS WARRANTY" How could this be?
How could this not be covered if this was in fact what had happened to our mattress? We were adults with adult children... no little one's to get the bed wet. We do not live in a wet climate, no water damage has ever happened. The only thing could be normal heat from the body. How could this cause mold? Bigger question yet...how could this not be a covered event? After spending over $4K on this bed would we simply have to throw it out?
There is no way we could keep it if it is mold. So, here is what happened. I contacted Tempur Pedic. They asked that I take pictures of the bed. The warranty would be void if I had removed the protective cover that says tempur pedic on it. I am very glad I didn't do this, as I was tempted to do so to get a better look at what this was under there. I filled out a warranty claim form. I was contacted by email and told that the warranty team was reviewing my case and that "mold" was not a covered event. However, my case was being considered. I waited on pins and needles. Within a few days another email came. I was afraid to open it. This second email stated that as a "courtesy" my bed would be covered this ONE time. I was very thankful. We were contacted by a delivery company and a new bed was delivered and the old mattresses were removed. We kept the frame & remotes. Now, the question is... will this happen again, or is tempur pedic aware of this problem since we purchased our bed in 2003 and are they now making the new material with anit-mold material so that this will not happen again? Not sure. I sure hope so. I do know that this material does not breathe, it's stays warm. This is an issue especially in the hot summer! That is part of the problem. It does get extremely cold in the winter where we live and the mattress will get hard as a brick if we are gone for the weekend. Electric blankets and mattress covers are not recommended by the manufacturer as they break down the tempur material. So, if I had to do it all over again would I buy a one again? NO.

OK - overpriced joke!

.....had this RHAPSODY since 2008 - today I wake up, and upper back hurts like hell, so I'm pissed and came here....its like this most of the time..once in a while you get a normal nights sleep, ...just a sickening mystery...This is also after I went and spent $130 on their new "Cloud pillow"....obviously hasnt helped...........also after 3 years the stupid glorified piece of foam has a worn in sink hole in it and basically is miserable...

It fools people, the initial feeling of these beds is like "ohh wow" ...lay there a while and you sink in and it puts weird stress on your back and pulls muscle as the heavier parts of your body sink in and the lighter do not....I get better sleep from a cheap firm bed in a motel.

I've had it...........So instead of giving thousands to a rip off GIMMICK company like tempurloser!, go get a 500 dollar bed and be happy..exactly what I'm going to do...

They should be run out of business.

I have always had back pain! Since I bought my bed, it has gotten so much worse I wake up unrested every morning. I went to Yosemite and spent three nights on a cheap pile of crap mattress pad and woke up feeling incredible. One night back in my tempurpedic, I'm in pain. What a waste of money!!!

We've had our new Tempur-Pedic Cloud for just over a month and while my husband claims he has never slept so back-pain-free, I am now experiencing back pain for the first time in my life! We are both 39 and both weigh about 155.

I'm happy to see so many others have gotten over the pain during the adjustment period, but wonder if we will ever get over missing our fluffy soft pillow-top mattress that we got rid of when we purchased this one.

Does anyone know of a way of making this mattress feel softer? I tried a feather bed on top, but it just makes the mattress harder because it can't conform to the heat of your body. Thanks for any advice you might have!

I have owned a TP since April 2010. I am a US Marine and am away most of the time, but my wife enjoys the mattress and has had no complaints so far. The smell cleared after a few months, but it was tolerable. There are only two downsides I have experienced so far.

1) I sleep hot at night, but I have always been like this unless the room is frigid. I am going to try some Underarmor loose attire and see if this makes a difference and if that dont work I am going to invest in some of those cooling sheets.

2) Every time I return after being away for some time my body has to readjust. This last time it only took two weeks for my body to adjust after I returned home.

The pillows, we purchased two of the Comfort TP pillows. I feel that they are too big and dont condense enough, leaving your body in an awkward position. My wife has no problem with these.
I purchased a TP neck pillow for back sleepers on my last deployment and not only did I fall in love with it, I also stopped having headaches upon waking in the morning. The headaches have plagued me for the last 3 years and this pillow has been my saving grace. This pillow is also a lot thinner than the other pillows which helps keep my head and neck more inline with the rest of my body after it settles in the mattress.

I hope this helps.

I purchased a Temperpedic in early 2007 and my husband and I enjoyed pain-free sleep until about 3 months ago when we both began experiencing neck and shoulder pain to the point where our arms and hands are numb by morning. It was not until we slept away from home on several occasions and had very restful nights that I began to question whether our mattress had deteriorated. After reading the numerous comments here, I do think that our mattress needs replacement, which is troubling when you consider its cost. I will not buy another Temperpedic. I hope that there are other options out there now which will have more longevity.

I got a Comforpedic (Simmons memory foam) bed a few months ago, replacing the 20+ year old terrible bed I had. The first week, I slept well on it, but the second week, my back and fibromyalgia pain were AWFUL sending me into a flare, and I was tempted to send it back (warranty) but researching online told me I may need to adjust to the bed, especially after coming from such a poor support bed previously, so I stuck with it. After a week of intense back pain, it began to slowly improve and after a month, I was sleeping much better, falling asleep faster and staying asleep. Now I love it. I can feel the support of my lower back, hips and shoulders more than anything else I've ever slept in. I also use a cervical pillow when I sleep and that helps.

I went on vacation for 4 days, sleeping on an old bed and came back to have a rough re-adjustment to my bed again. I am hoping to find a better way to adjust to other beds when I'm away as this re-adjustment is painful. Otherwise, I still love my Comforpedic.

My husband and I have owned a Tempur-Pedic mattress for about 5 years. Once it finally gassed out(the chemical smell was awful for about the first 3 months) we really started enjoying the comfort of the bed. Unfortunately, that comfort has not lasted.

The memory foam has developed sagging where we sleep. It feels like we are sleeping in holes. While the sagging in the foam is visible, it does not demonstrate the actual depth of the sinking we experience when we lay down. Now both of us wake up every morning with body aches, especially aching backs.

I've been reading customer posts about the nightmare attempts of trying to make claims on the warranty. I'm about to jump into the process and I'm not looking forward to it.

One poster asked for weight/height information. My husband is a slender, tall man. I am average height and about 40 lbs overweight. The differences in our body frames has not seemed to make any difference in the sagging. Both sides of the bed are failing in performance.

Fantastic forum, but only a few people are giving their weights and ages (I’m 145 and 61), and that could be vital. Please tell. Something else that might be important is whether people take sleeping pills. At around 50 I had some insomnia after a death in the family, and needed sleeping pills. I continued taking them for quite a few years as a convenience. By 55 I started feeling like 95: so stiff in the morning I could hardly walk. It finally dawned on me that the sleeping pills were keeping me too still. I needed to change position -thrash around, maybe- in order to keep the muscles limber. I got off the sleeping pills and it worked like a charm. No stiffness whatever. I sleep on a conventional mattress, but I’m shopping. It worries me that a TP might have the same effect of keeping people too still. It might matter a lot more as you age.

FYI, Some people have said they think Tempurpedic is planing some of the positive posts (or I work for tempurpedic).

I've looked through the comment logs to see if some of the positive posts are coming through the same IP address or anything or anything suspicious, but I haven't seen anything. I love my Tempurpedic bed, so the "I love it" posts don't seem strange to me. And if I worked for them, I'd delete most of the negative posts (duh!).

I can only agree with most of the reports I have read here. My wife lovers it. I am becoming a cripple. In my Tempur Pedic bed, I can fall asleep quickly. After 4-5 hours, I cannot stay on the Tempur Pedic bed any more due to lower back pain. I sleep 2-3 hours in my recliner daily. I am a very active worker and still remain stiff and sore until 9AM. There must be some sort of fix for these problems. I can't be spending this kind of money for a new mattress every three to four years.

Trevor, people talk about the fumes. But I can't believe if they are that bad for (as compared to other things) that this would not have been legally addressed by now.

Check your manual (or the web site) these beds are supposed to be "operated" between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, maybe the new one has a different temperature? Obviously keeping the room cooler helps makes you feel less hot :)

Some people don't want to keep it that cool; it's not the products fault (sort of). Fortunately, I love it cool...

A lot of people complaining, but we know complainers complain more than people compliment. But it's enough to make me nervous when my bed starts getting older, I love my Tempurpedic Classic(?) and would hate to get a new one that I'm not as happy with.

Thanks for commenting and come back with a report later…

Hi all. Up all night reading this huge debate. Thank you all.
Day two of Cloud Supreme ownership. Trashed our ten-yr old TP Original when they delivered this one. Hope we've done the right thing. So far feels less comfortable. Hotter. Both have uncomfortable back pain. Stinks. The sellers have such an advantage as any mattress is SUCH a pain to swap out, the very idea is daunting.

Has anyone determined for SURE that these fumes are safe/not safe? Surely it's possible to know?

Spending this much money OUGHT to banish anxiety, not introduce it.

Hi Gary- Hope you had a fun and safe 4rth of July!!! just a quick update: love my Termpur-pedic Classic bed that my husband and I bought last 9/2010. Love the comfortable- healing- long sleep every night. Love waking up pain free from my bulging disc (2) on my lower neck vertibrae and sciatic nerve on my lower back that use to radiate excrusiating pain on both legs. Thanks again for your blog- truly apprecitate it!!!

I stopped reading these complaints after a bit because I am totally happy with my tempur-pedic bed. We did not buy the generic bed or a mattress topper. We've had it for 3 years and love it. My chiropractor sells them because he believes they are the best bed to sleep on. It does have a warranty on it so we'll see how it does and whether we can get service on it if there is a problem. My husband sleeps too hot on it so I'm going to try the suggestion to use extra sheets or order the cooling pad that is made by another company.
