That was back when they had only 128K of RAM and didn't even HAVE Hard Drives. Entire OS was on one 3+1/2 floppy disk, so you booted from one floppy, then switched it out for the application disk and then swapped diskettes again for your data disk. Later you could get a tricked out "FAT MAC" with 512K RAM and a 5MB Hard Drive! Woohoo!
